THE STORYLINE
GAME QUICK FACTS
• Off to their best start since 2005 (21-10), Bradley dropped four games during its recent 5-game road trip and will be trying to regain its early-season momentum at O’Brien Field. • The Braves will open their season-long, 8-game home stand by hosting Interstate 74 rival Illinois State for three games this weekend at O’Brien Field. • The Braves, who are 5-1 at home this year, will be playing their first Missouri Valley Conference home games of the season. • Both Bradley (at Indiana State) and Illinois State (Creighton), lost 2-of-3 to start the MVC race.
BRADLEY-ISU SERIES • With series records available going back to 1921, Illinois State owns a 95-92 record against I-74 rival Bradley. • The Redbirds have had the upper hand of late, winning 7-of-10 since the start of the 2008 season. • Bradley had won 7-of-9 from 2005-07. • The Redbirds also own a 7-6 record against Bradley at O’Brien Field since the Braves began playing their home games at the downtown Peoria ballpark in 2003. • Illinois State has won the season series in each of the last three years, but neither team has won the season series in four straight years since the Redbirds won the season series in five straight years as non-conference rivals from 1976-80.

PRESEASON LOOK
O’BRIEN FIELD
• Third-year Bradley head coach Elvis Dominguez leads a lineup that returns 16 lettermen, including six starting position players and seven pitchers, from a squad that went 20-32 overall last season and finished seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference with an 8-13 league record. • Offensively, the 2011 Braves figured to be paced by senior outfielder Brian Martin, who led the 2010 Braves with a .364 batting average, as well as 104 total bases, 39 runs batted in, 12 doubles and 24 stolen bases. • Third-year junior pitchers Joe Bircher (LHP), Jacob Booden (RHP) and Justin Ziegler (RHP) were expected to provide the leadership for a pitching staff that features six first-year Bradley arms.
• Located in downtown Peoria, O’Brien Field has served as Bradley’s home stadium since 2003. • Including a 5-1 start to the 2011 home season, Bradley boasts a 97-73 (.571) all-time record at O’Brien Field. • Dating back to the end of last season, Bradley has won 10 of its last 12 games at O’Brien Field. • Bradley is 48-48 all-time in Missouri Valley Conference games at O’Brien Field, including a 6-7 mark against weekend visitor Illinois State. • The ballpark also serves as the home stadium for the Peoria Chiefs, the Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. ZIEGLER CLOSES
EXCELLING AT SMALL BALL
• Junior right-hander Justin Ziegler has excelled in the closer role in his third year with the Braves and set the school single-season saves record (8) just 26 games into this season. • Ziegler did not own a save in 27 appearances, primarily as a middle reliever, in his first two years with the Braves, but already boasts eight saves in 14 outings this year. • By throwing a perfect ninth inning April 5 against Illinois, Ziegler earned his record eighth save of the year. • His eight saves this year also moves him into a tie for second on the school’s career saves list, just two shy of the record total. Bradley Career Saves 1. 10 Jason Simmons 1990-93 2. 8 Justin Ziegler 2009-Active 8 Kori Jensen 2008-10 4. 6 Brad Altbach 2007-10 6 Michael Christl 2004-07 6 Ron Hensel 1999-02
• While the Braves rank seventh of eight Valley teams with just nine home runs, Bradley has utilized small ball to average 6.39 runs per game. • Entering the weekend, Bradley is second in The Valley with 43 sacrifices and the Braves are averaging 1.90 stolen bases per game. • The 43 sacrifices already is the fifth-best singleseason total in school history. • Bradley’s 31 opponents have just 29 sacrifices and 18 stolen bases (in 32 attempts). • With at least 55 games on the 2011 schedule, Bradley is on pace to shatter the school singleseaon record for sacrifice bunts (76) and eclipse school-record for stolen bases in a season (104). COOLING OFF PERIOD • Bradley’s bats cooled during its recent 5-game road swing. • The Braves hit just .253 in the five games and struggled to take advantage of the 44 walks the opposing pitchers issued. • While the hosts hit .341 with runners on base and .386 with runners in scoring position in the last five games, Bradley hit .262 with runners on base and .274 with runners in scoring position.
FAMILIAR LEFT SIDE • Since sophomore Jason Leblebijian took hold of the starting shortstop position in the second game of a doubleheader versus Army March 19, 2010, head coach Elvis Dominguez has started the same left side of his defense in 66 of the last 70 games.

2011 Bradley Braves Baseball Game Notes • Senior Brian Martin has started each of the last 70 games in centerfield. • Leblebijian has been the starting shortstop in 67 of the last 70 games. • Junior third baseman Rob Elliott has started 66 of the last 70 games at the hot corner. • Sophomore Michael Tauchman has started 67 of the last 70 in left field. • Martin, Leblebijian and Elliott have started all 31 games to date this season at their respective positions, while Tauchman missed only the March 19 game versus Butler.
TAUCHMAN’S EYE • Bradley leftfielder Mike Tauchman, the team’s leading hitter with a .370 batting average, is showing good discipline at the plate. • In addition to his hot hitting, Tauchman has drawn at least one walk in 10 consecutive games. • He has walked 15 times overall during the streak, including seven times in the last three games. • When the ball has been in the strike zone, Tauchman has done a good job of hitting it as he is batting .387 in the last 10 games. • He boasts a team-leading .507 on-base percentage, including a .596 obp in the last 10 games.
NEWCOMER BOOST • Bradley has gotten a boost from a quintet of newcomers so far this season. • Jerrod Eigsti, a native of nearby Eureka, Ill., who transferred to Bradley from Des Moines Area Community College, leads the Braves with 23 RBI’s while splitting time between first base (11 games) and second base (19 games). • Freshman Derek Sprout, from nearby Chillicothe, Ill., is the team’s fourth-leading hitter with a .290 batting average and is fourth with 17 RBI’s. • Freshman catcher Austin Jarvis has started 21 games behind the plate and has thrown out eight of the 15 runners that have tried to steal against him. • On the mound, junior left-hander Tory Doerr is 2-0 in four midweek starts, while junior righthander Danny Gifford is 3-3 with a 3.34 ERA in his team-leading 15 appearances.
MARTIN’S IMPACT • Senior centerfielder Brian Martin was the team’s leading hitter with a .364 batting average last season, but is hitting just .244 31 games into the 2011 season. • As the leadoff hitter, Martin’s ability to get on base with hits has had a definite impact on Bradley’s results this year.
Team Notes
• In the 19 games Martin has gotten at least one base hit, the Braves are 15-4. • In Martin’s 13 hitless games, Bradley is 4-9.
ELLIOTT’S LEGS • Third baseman Rob Elliott, a fourth-year junior, leads the team with 17 stolen bases and has cracked the school’s career top-10 steals list. • Elliott has swiped at least 12 bases in each of his first three full seasons and enters the weekend with 45 thefts in 53 career attempts. • Elliott enjoyed his second 3-steals game of the season last Sunday at Indiana State and has been successful in his last 15 stolen base attempts.
