✂Hair how-to A glimpse backstage... Want to know how we got our models looking so vintagefabulous? Our Make-up Artist, Laurence Close from the HMS Creative team, was on hand with his brushes and array of cosmetics to create the beautiful looks. Here he explains how he did it, so you can get busy with your brush set at home.
The skin
The skin was cleaned and then prepped with Benefit’s POREfessional. £23.50. This gives an excellent base for foundation and leaves a smooth, flawless finish. Then I used DiorSkin Nude Skin Glowing Make-up, £31, DiorSkin Nude Glow Versatile Powder Make-Up, £37, and Dior SkinFlash Pen, £26, under the eyes and on the brow bone.
The cheeks
Blush was a combination of Clinique Innocent Peach, £21, along the entire cheekbone, and then a flush of Diorskin Rosy Glow in Petal, £29.50, on the apples of the cheek. Then I applied Diorskin Nude Shimmer Instant Illuminating Powder, £32, as a highlighter on top of the cheekbone close to the eye and back into the hairline.
The eyes
On the eyes I used a Clinique Lid Smoothie Antioxidant 8-Hour Colour in Born Freesia, £17, and then washed over that with a soft grey shadow from the Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette. On the brow bone, I used Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow in Daybreak £15, and in the socket line I applied some of the Clinique Powder Blush in Innocent Peach. I used Diorshow Blackout Mascara, £23, to coat the lashes.
The lips
I wanted a very subtle effect but not see-through like a sheer gloss, so I mixed a bright pink pencil with a bit of white pencil and added some Carmex lip balm, £2.69, which gave me the softest colour pink on the blonde model. Then I mixed an orange and white pencil with Carmex to give me the softest peach on our dark-haired model.
The lasting thought...
‘Unlike clothes and accessories, make-up requires no commitment; if you don’t like it, you wipe it off! And the looks change so fast that it’s almost weekly and is driven by what we see on red carpets and films and on TV. You can buy any colour or texture make-up you can think of, and the array of lines from cheap to hugely expensive is endless. Be brave, change your make-up according to what you are wearing, learn how to apply it well and then you will develop the skill to create whatever look you want for that event, meeting or date. What’s most important is that you will create your own style.’ Laurence Close, Make-up Artist
