GCYC All-Star Player Interest and Commitment WHAT IS ALL-STARS? o o o o o o o o
"All-stars" as a sports term refers to individual players named to an "all-star" roster or team representing the top performers during and before the end of the baseball season. All-Star Tournament play begins immediately after the GCYC regular season concludes and can continue through the summer. Each age group can send 12-15 players into All-Star Competition. The primary goal is to win games and to put the strongest available team on the field All-Star Tournaments start with District Play and can continue into State and Region. All-star Tournaments can also include open tournament prior to and after District Tournaments. All-Stars requires a significant amount of player and parent time. There will be uniform and travel costs that the Parent will be responsible. Without Player/Parent full cooperation, the team’s chances of succeeding are greatly reduced.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PLAY ALL-STARS o o o
The playing age of Little League softball tournament play is as of January 1 of the current year. The playing age of Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth tournament play is age as of April 30 of the current year. A player must play in at least 60% of his/her team’s respective scheduled games.
WHEN DOES THE “ROAD TO ALL-STARS” BEGIN? The "Road to All-Stars" actually begins when the season starts. Throughout the season, players start defining themselves through their performance, attitude and leadership qualities as potential all-star candidates. Players are selected to teams according to the criteria which is listed below.
COMMITMENT All-Star play requires a post season commitment from both the player and the parents. Everyone who is to be considered for an All-Star team must understand the level of participation and costs and travel that is required.
DURATION OF ALL-STAR PRACTICE AND TOURNAMENTS All players are expected to be available for the full schedule of practices and games starting after their respective season ends and tournament play can continue to as late as the end of July 2016.
PLAYING TIME DURING ALL-STAR GAMES Playing time is effected by a Player’s strengths, weaknesses, the game situation, strength of the other team, game status, etc. There is no guarantee that your child will be given playing time should they be selected to play on an All-Star team. Also bear in mind that unlike the regular season, players may not necessary play the position that they are accustomed to. Coaches will evaluate players and position them according to their skill level and what will best suit the team.
NUMBER OF TOURNAMENTS Each All-Star Team will play in the District Tournament and could potentially play at the State and National level. If a Team/Coach wants to play in additional Post-Season Tournaments, the cost will be the responsibility of the Parents/Players.
