It’s seventh period and one student is shooting his gun, another is participating in Judo, and the final is swimming in the pool. The catch, none of them are competing
for Wylie East. Students are allowed to get a shortened schedule and earn a PE credit if they participate in their respective sport the required number of hours in the week. “If they participate in the sport over 15 hours a week at the location, they are able to recieve credit

UIL meets for another high school. “Wylie ISD does not offer swimming/diving, but those sports are governed by the UIL. Because of that, a student at Wylie East would be prohibited from participating on the swimming/diving team of another UIL member school,” head Wylie ISD athletic director Kyle Craighead said. If a student is participating in UIL governed sports at an academy, not another school, the student can be eligible for early release and PE credit. Junior Paul Pierce swims competitively for the City of Plano Swimmers, where he practices at Williams High School during his seventh period. Pierce competes against other city leagues on a regular basis. “I meet at the high school [Williams] every day for two hours Monday-Saturday for swimming and then work on my strength for an hour a day at the gym there,” Pierce said. Sophomore Geronimo Saucedo participates in Judo at the Becorra Judo Club every day after school. Saucedo puts in close to 20 hours a week at the dojo, where he has had major success. Saucedo has traveled around the globe to compete in his competitions. “I have won multiple National championships, placed at four panam championships and participated at the cadet world championship in the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sarajevo,” Saucedo said.
