From the Pastor The Kingdom of Heaven is like: ...yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened. treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. excerpts from Matthew 13:33, 44-46

Rev. Sarah Varnell Baby Elizabeth, at 4.5 months old, is getting to the point where she is beginning to have some say about what she experiences in the world around her. She looks back and forth at her surroundings, she grabs at things and people (and glasses) that interest her, and occasionally, she gets excited enough that she lunges her body in the general direction of her desire (like toward one of our family dogs). Just the other day I was steadying her in the sink for a bath when she grabbed a fist full of bubbles from the baby soap that quickly went straight into her mouth. For the last few weeks in worship we have been focusing on: What is the kingdom of God? What does it look like? Who does it include? We’ve been seeking to answer these questions in the grand scale and on the small scale, because the parables keep bringing us back to the small beginnings that lead to the ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom. God’s kingdom exists among us now, but not in fullness, and as Christians we are called to live into God’s hopes and desires for the world and not our own. God takes the least, last and lost of humanity; and makes them first in His Kingdom; what’s more is that God calls us to do likewise. It has gotten me thinking about metaphors from my own life stage that capture what Jesus had in mind. ...the kingdom of God is like a baby who sees a dog and in her joy lunges with her whole body in that general direction not taking into account the barriers along the way. I’m seeing images for the kingdom come alive in my home life, and in our church life. As the supplies we have gathered at the church for the Holston Home for Children Back to School party, I can see the kingdom of God is like a small group of people all asking the question, “What can we do the deepen our connection?” I can’t imagine where we will go next as we deepen our connection to Holston Home and other groups that we are privileged to serve alongside in mission, but I do know that God works in small, subversive ways to bring about acts of justice, inclusion and incredible love; the last will be the first. Which has me curious. What kinds of kingdom images are you glimpsing ?...in your own life and in our life as a church family ? I hope to see you and yours in worship this Sunday at 10:45 a.m.! We are planning to bless all of our supplies for the party, and celebrate “Back to School” for all those connected to the school system. Peace, Pastor Sarah
