Volunteer Hours All 9th through 12th grade Student-Athletes and Managers will be expected to complete at least 20 hours of community service and/or volunteer hours by the end of the 2017-2018 season. All Student-Athletes/Managers will be expected to complete 20 hours of community service for each year participating in basketball. 10 of the 20 hours must be directly related to Forest Lake Girls’ Basketball. Parent volunteer hours directly related to the Girls’ Basketball Program will count towards his/her daughters’ total hours. The Community of Forest Lake has allowed, and continues to allow, many opportunities for Student-Athletes in the area to become involved in. The volunteer hours will be a way to give back to the community, while also contributing to the strong tradition in the Forest Lake Area. It is always important to be a thankful person, acknowledging the many sacrifices others have made. Student-Athletes/Managers must explain in writing their activity along with their hours; a parent and/or guardian’s signature will verify the hours worked. An email from a parent or guardian explaining the volunteer hours will also verify hours. Please make sure Coach Wagner receives all information regarding volunteer hours.
TEAM Rules & Varsity Lettering Guidelines 1.) The Student-Athlete must attend ALL practices, meetings and Team events as designated by the Coaching Staff. Excused absences require advance notice to and approval from a member of the Coaching Staff. The StudentAthlete is responsible for communicating this information to the Coaching Staff as soon as possible. Unexcused absences will result in reduction of playing time. It is the Student-Athlete’s responsibility to contact Coach Wagner and the Student-Athlete’s specific coach when unable to make a practice or game due to an illness, etc. 2.) The Student-Athlete must meet all requirements for eligibility in terms of enrollment and academic standing. 3.) The Student-Athlete must NOT violate any team or school rule, regulation or policy. As a member of the Forest Lake Girls’ Basketball Program, it is expected that all Student-Athletes will respect herself, her teammates and all coaches. For example, Student-Athletes that have visible hickeys will not be allowed to practice or play in games as this is a form of selfdisrespect. 4.) The Student-Athlete must NOT violate any rules of alcohol, nonprescription drugs or tobacco product use. Use of these substances may result in dismissal from the team. 5.) The Student-Athlete must have practiced with the Varsity team for 50% or more of the season. 6.) The Student-Athlete must have dressed for 50% or more of the Varsity games. 7.) If a Student-Athlete quits the team, at any time before the season is complete, it disqualifies her from lettering even if she has fulfilled all of the above policies. 8.) All Student-Athletes must abide by and follow the rules outlined by the Forest Lake High School Athletic Department with regards to Academics, Attendance, MN State High School League Chemical Violations and Code of Conduct.
9.) Any Student-Athlete involved with hazing of any kind, as outlined by the Forest Lake High School Athletic Department and MN State High School League, will be removed from the Girls’ Basketball Program for the remainder of the year with no refund given. 10.) A Student-Athlete may receive a Varsity letter through the Coaches’ discretion if the entire Coaching Staff believes a Student-Athlete was an integral part of the team. 11.) All Student-Athlete lettering decisions are ultimately up to the Coaching Staff discretion. All Student-Athletes will be reviewed for lettering qualifications at the end of the season.
Try-out and Cut Policy 1.) Being a member of a previous year’s basketball team does not guarantee an automatic spot on a team for the next season. 2.) Participation in off-season work-outs, practices, teams, camps, fundraising, and anything associated with Forest Lake Girls’ Basketball does not guarantee an automatic spot on a team for the next season. 3.) To make a team, each perspective Student-Athlete must go through a voluntary try-out at the beginning of each season. 4.) Perspective Student-Athletes should attend all try-out dates. 5.) Try-outs may be extended for Student-Athletes that missed a try-out session due to illness, injury, or other circumstances at the discretion of the Head Coach and Athletic Director. 6.) The try-out period will be of sufficient length to allow the Coaching Staff plenty of time to make a reasonable assessment of each Student-Athlete’s ability and potential. 7.) Coaches will follow guidelines put in place by the Head Coach when evaluating a perspective Student-Athlete. The guidelines will encompass, but are not limited to the following areas: a. Skill Level b. Work Ethic c. Attitude d. Coach-ability
8.) During the try-out, the Coaching Staff will utilize any form of drills or scrimmages to evaluate a Student-Athlete’s ability. 9.) Student-Athletes who make a team will be named to one of the following teams: 9th Grade Team(s), 10th Team, Junior Varsity, or Varsity Team. 10.) At the end of the try-out period, the Coaching Staff will meet and make team selections. 11.) Sole discretion pertaining to the selection of a Student-Athlete to a team will rest with the Coaching Staff and the decisions of the Coaching Staff will be final. 12.) The Coaching Staff will personally meet with each perspective Student-Athlete to inform her of the staff’s decision and if she has made a team, what team she will play on. At this time, any other information that Student-Athlete may need to know will be communicated to her.
Forest Lake Athletic Department Game Day Attire All Student-Athletes will dress appropriately on game days. The dress code is from all Student-Athletes, 9th through Varsity, and is as follows: 1.)
All girls will wear a dress, skirt, dress pants or khakis, and a button down shirt, polo or dress shirt/sweater.
2.)
All boys will wear a button down shirt and tie, or polo, dress pants or khakis.
3.)
If a coach determines that a team will wear “team gear” for that particular game day, that is acceptable. In this situation, jeans are acceptable, but cannot have holes; must be presentable jeans.
All Student-Athletes are leaders at Forest Lake High School and should expect excellence in all facets of their everyday life, team and program.
