Global Connections 2: Global Environment Unit 9: Social Entrepreneurship - Environment, Agriculture and Water Conservation
In Unit 9: Social Entrepreneurship - Environment, Agriculture and Water Conservation, you will relate concepts including agricultural production and water/sanitation to selected social entrepreneurship regions of study. You will explore these questions:
• How does agriculture in your entrepreneurship region of study compare to agriculture in the United States?
• How does the geography of your entrepreneurship region of study determine the
agricultural methods used for farming? • What percentage of your entrepreneurship region of study experiences water stress, and how does it impact the quality of life for people in that region? • How do water and sanitation issues impact your entrepreneurship region of study? • What is the process for treating waste water in your entrepreneurship region of study?
To the Teacher
This Global Connections II Workbook is organized in the sequence of activities as indicated in Unit 9: Social Entrepreneurship - Environment, Agriculture and Water Conservation, except for the Journal or Blog Activity and Perspective Taking Activity which should be used during or after the study of the lessons.
To the Student
This Global Connections II Workbook gives you the activities and activity sheets for Unit 9: Social Entrepreneurship - Environment, Agriculture and Water Conservation. Keep the workbook available, as it can help you in reviewing information for class discussions and tests.

Lesson 1 - Building an Agricultural Profile
Agricultural Profile Foldable Notes NAME
Orient your paper in the landscape position and then fold the left and right hand sides of your paper toward the middle until the edges meet. Crease each fold. Your sheets should now look like three-panel brochures. The left hand panel will feature information about agriculture in your social entrepreneurship region of study and the right hand panel will feature information about agriculture in the United States. Create tabs in your foldable by cutting the left and right outer panels from their edges to the creases to create eight tabs on each side. The top left-hand tab will be labeled with the name of the region of study and the top right-hand tab will be labeled “United States.” One way to create the tabs is to keep panels folded and use rulers and pencils to sketch faint lines across the front panels every 1” starting at the top of the foldables. You can then cut each side fold along the pencil lines. You will need to pick seven facts that you feel are the most revealing of your social entrepreneurship region of study. You should then label the outer tabs with the categories of information you intend to record. For example: • Arable land. • Fertilizer. • Food production. • Tractors. • Workers per hectare. • Livestock production. • Cereal production. Under each region/country’s tab, you will record the corresponding facts for each region/country. Lesson 2 - How Geography Affects Farming Methods
Farming Methods Matching Game NAME
Match each farming method listed on the left hand side to its definition on the right hand side. A. dry land farming
_____ growing different crops on the same land in sequential seasons
B. crop rotation
_____ land is cultivated, used briefly, then abandoned
C. slash and burn _____ intensive method of farming which requires that water be brought directly to crops through systems of irrigation D. shifting cultivation
_____ cutting and burning forests to create fields for planting
E. irrigation farming
_____non-irrigated cultivation of dry lands
F. plantation farming _____ cultivating the same crop on the same land for long periods of time

Lesson 3 - Public Service Announcement
Public Service Announcement Script Notes NAME
Imagine that a local television station is donating air time for the purpose of airing public service announcements about water and sanitation in various world regions. The goal of the public service announcements is to raise money to improve water and sanitation conditions around the world. Your challenge is to learn more about water and sanitation in your social entrepreneurship region of study and to write a script for a 30-second public service announcement that will be recorded in a fictional studio next week. Region of Study: __________________________________________________ Use the space below to take notes for writing your public service announcement.

Journal or Blog Activity NAME
Read the quote below and respond to the questions that follow. “Because of technological limits, there is a certain amount of food that we can produce per acre. If we were to have intensive greenhouse agriculture, we could have much higher production.” - Ralph Merkle (Merkle, n.d., para. 1) What are your thoughts on growing food in greenhouses as opposed to open farms? Would you rather eat food grown on an open farm or from a greenhouse?

Perspective Taking Activity NAME
Read the quote below and respond to the questions that follow. “In many developing countries, women and girls walk on average six kilometers each day to fetch water. They carry around 20 kilograms -- the equivalent of a cabin luggage -- on their heads” (Women & Water, 2011, para. 1). Imagine that you are one of the women referred to in the quote above. From your perspective, should it always be the female’s role to fetch and carry water for the family’s daily use? Why or why not?

Post-Assessment Activity: Knowledge Tier for Agriculture and Water NAME
You have acquired significant knowledge on agriculture and water since you completed worksheets as a pre-assessment exercise. The three sections of the pyramid represent the same three levels of knowledge complexity as they did the first time you completed the exercise. Write down everything you now know about agriculture and water, placing facts or knowledge points in the appropriate tiers.
