FROG HOPS

“Frog Hops” is an activity that introduces this week’s theme while children jump like frogs to see who can jump the farthest. WHAT YOU NEED: A permanent marker and painter’s tape WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Place a strip of painter’s tape on the floor in an open area. During the Activity: Have kids line up behind the tape line. Tell one or two kids at a time to squat and do their best frog hop. Write each child’s name on a piece of tape and mark where they landed. Once everyone has hopped, look at all the spots where the kids landed and see who had the longest hop. Repeat if desired.

GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF ME.

After the Activity: Sit down together and introduce the Bible story.

MEMORY VERSE

BIBLE STORY FOCUS

WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “Come line up behind this tape line. I have something fun for us to do today! What animal says ribbit-ribbit? (Pause.) A frog says ribbit-ribbit! That’s right! We are going to take one big frog hop and see who hops the farthest.” During the Activity: “Okay, get ready and hop! (Pause.) Woo-hoo! Those were great hops! I’ll mark where you landed and the next froggies will get a turn. Ready? Hop! (Pause.) More great hops! (Continue until each child has had a turn to hop.) Now let’s see where all my froggy friends hopped. (Pause.) Who hopped the farthest? (Pause.) That was fun! Now everyone hop over here and sit with me on the floor.” After the Activity: “Did you know that some people keep frogs as pets? They do. They have to make sure the frog has food and water and someplace safe to sit. They have to take care of a frog just like you would have to take care of a dog. Today we are going to hear a story about some people who took care of each other.”

FEED THE FROG

“Feed the Frog” is an activity that introduces this week’s Bible story while encouraging kids to use their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills to transfer objects using tongs from the table to the frog’s mouth. WHAT YOU NEED: Empty square tissue box (or wipe container or parmesan cheese container); green construction paper; scissors; clear tape, 2 large googly eye stickers; black, gray, and brown pom-poms; and plastic tongs or plastic tweezers WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Wrap the tissue box with green paper to cover. Attach eyes at the top above the opening. Remove the clear plastic at the opening. Scatter the pom-poms on the table or floor and place the tongs/tweezers and frog box in the middle. During the Activity: Encourage kids to feed the frog by picking up one pom-pom at a time with the tongs/tweezers and placing it into the “mouth.” Call out the color of “bug” the kids need to pick up and feed to the frog. After the Activity: Pick up any remaining “bugs” and put them aside. Introduce the Bible story. You can see a sample of this craft on the September 2015 Pinterest board found on the First Look Curriculum’s Pinterest page: https://www.pinterest.com/firstlookcurr/ WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “Hello, friends! I found this cute little frog and he needs our help. Can you help me keep him safe and help me feed him? (Pause.) Great! Come and sit in a circle around him.” During the Activity: “You are helping protect this little frog by sitting around him! But he looks hungry. Can you help me feed him? (Pause.) Super. Pick up the tongs/ tweezers and I’ll tell you which color bug to feed him. (Pause.) Okay, pick up a black bug and feed it to him. (Pause.) Great job. This time feed him a brown bug. (Pause.) I think he’s still hungry. You pick what bug he gets this time. (Pause.) Super job, friends!”

During the Activity: “Today in our Bible story we heard about two spies that were on a super secret mission to check out a new place. But before the two spies left, their leader told them, (whisper) Be VERY quiet and don’t let the other army guys see you. If you get caught, you’ll be in BIG trouble. (Normal voice) So the spies went to the city but they were spotted! The two spies ran inside the house of a woman named Rahab. Now Rahab knew that these men were in God’s army and that God would want her to protect them and keep them safe. Rahab also knew that God’s whole army would come to her city. So she said, ‘I’ll help you escape now if you will help me and my family stay safe when God’s army comes back.’ Let’s tape this hay over the spies hiding on the roof. (Pause.) The spies agreed. They told Rahab to tie a red cord on the window so God’s army would know to protect her and keep her family safe. Let’s tape the red yarn to the window. (Pause.) Then the spies left and made it back safe and sound. When God’s army came back, they

FROG MEASURE

“Frog Measure” is an activity that encourages kids to use their fine and gross motor skills as they find different things to measure using frog cutouts. WHAT YOU NEED: Frog die cuts and painter’s tape. WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Place pieces of rolled tape on the back of each of the frogs. During the Activity: Walk around with the kids and, using the frog cutouts, measure how high or wide different items are. Let kids measure each other too. After the Activity: Sit together and talk about which of the things you measured together would be the best place to hide like the two spies did in the Bible story. Say the Bottom Line together. WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “Hey, friends! Look at all these froggies I have! Let’s go see what we can measure with them.” During the Activity: “What should we measure first? (Pause.) All right, let’s go! (Help kids measure the different items by stacking the frogs top to bottom.) How many frogs is this? (Pause.) (Help the kids count the number of frogs each item is.) Let’s measure each other. (Pause.) How many frogs are you? (Pause.) (Help the kids count the number of frogs each child is.) That was super fun. Come sit with me on the floor.” After the Activity: “What was the biggest thing we measured? (Pause.) How many frogs did it take? (Pause.) What was the smallest thing we measured with the frogs? (Pause.) Would the two spies in our Bible story hide better behind the biggest or the smallest thing (name the two items) we measured? (Pause.) The bigger one! Rahab helped protect the spies. The spies helped to protect Rahab and her family and God took care of them all! God will take care of you and me too! Who will take care of me? God will take care of me.”
