GOLDEN LIONS ROAR WHAT’S NEW IN THE WORLD OF COMPLIANCE? 2017-2018 Proposed Legislation Check out the 2017-2018 Proposed Legislation and let us know what you think! Your SAAC reps met with compliance to give us their feedback, which we submitted to the SWAC Office, which was then taken to the 2018 NCAA Legislation via the National SAAC. If you have anything to add we are all ears!!! Remember, these rules affect you!

NCAA Considering New Transfer Rules The Division I Transfer Working Group will spend the next several months seeking feedback on refined exceptions to the rule requiring all student-athletes to sit out a year of competition after transferring. Some exceptions now under consideration include: 

Academic success of transfers

Challenges of coaches changes

The working group is not considering — and never entertained — a model that would allow all student-athletes to transfer and compete immediately. Division I member schools will be encouraged to examine all the potential exceptions and provide feedback on each. Individual sport communities, such as coaches associations or committees overseeing a particular sport, also will be asked to provide input. Any questions, concerns and/or feedback, contact to the Athletics Compliance Office. Remember, these rules affect you!

At the 2017 Fall Commencement, 16 Student-Athletes graduated, 2 Soccer Student-Athletes graduated Summa Cum Laude, one of which, Makayla Cowles, received the prestigious Chancellor’s Medallion for graduating with the highest GPA in her Mathematics major in the School of Arts and Science.

COMPLIANCE TRIVIA Fade A. Way, a women's basketball student-athlete at Ocean State University, wants to take advantage of an early "Cyber Monday" sale. Her team is playing on the road this weekend, and she does not have her credit cards with her to make the purchase. The sport administrator traveling with the team offers to let Fade use her credit card to take advantage of the sale, and Fade will pay her back as soon as they get back to campus. Is it permissible for the sport administrator to allow the student-athlete to use her credit card to make the purchase since she will be reimbursed tomorrow? No. Division I NCAA Bylaw 16.11.2.2 states that an institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interests may not provide a student-athlete with extra benefits or services, including, but not limited to: [R] (a) A loan of money; (b) A guarantee of bond; (c) An automobile or the use of an automobile; (d) Transportation (e.g., a ride home with a coach), except as permitted in Bylaw 16.9.1, even if the student-athlete reimburses the institution or the staff member for the appropriate amount of the gas or expense; or (e) Signing or co-signing a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan.

WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR? IN THE COMMUNITY Aramark, UAPB distribute 500 pairs of shoes to Jefferson County youth Aramark employees and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) hosted a Samaritan’s Feet event recently in observance of the National Day of Service. The volunteers, who were a mix of Aramark employees, UAPB students and student-athletes, and Pine Bluff community members distributed 500 pairs of new athletic shoes to pre-registered local children that attend the district’s schools. The volunteers actively engaged the children as they helped wash the recipients’ feet and fit them in their new shoes and socks while conveying a message of hope and caring. Leading up to this event, Aramark donated $10,000 (cost of the shoes) to Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization which collects and distributes shoes for people in need within targeted areas throughout the U.S. and internationally.
