Recognized as the "Father of Boston University Crew," 1993 BU Hall of Fame Inductee James Conlan ('40) founded the Boston University Independents in 1937, as crew did not become a varsity sport until 1939.
One of the finest oarsmen ever to have been associated with Boston University, Ted Nash was a member of the U.S. crew teams that won the Gold Medal in the 1960 Olympics and the Gold Medals in the Pan American Games in Chicago and Brazil. He was eight times a U.S. national champion, and in 1960, was named to the Helms Athletic Hall of Fame. Equally successful as a coach, he guided the freshmen crew at the University of Pennsylvania to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association title four years in a row. In his first two years as varsity coach at Penn, his crews finished first and third in the nationals. He eventually joined the U.S. National Team as a coach. In 2008 for the Beijing Olympics, Nash led the 2- team.He is a two-time inductee of the National Rowing Foundation Hall of Fame.
