Teacher note: In this Cooperative Learning, students will write a three-digit number, compare this number with your (the teacher’s) number, and arrange whole numbers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least within their group. Group size: whole class, divided in two groups Materials: index cards; markers; timer Before class: Gather materials. Directions: • Divide the class into two groups. • Have each group choose one person as a representative to determine who will go first. These 2 students will go to the front of the class and play “rock, paper, scissors.” The winner’s group will go first. • Distribute an index card to every student in the class. You will also need one. • Everyone will write down a three-digit number. The group going first will arrange its numbers in order from least to greatest and stand in that order. (If 2 students write down the same number, they will stand in front of one another at the same spot in line to represent that they are equal.) Students have two minutes to accomplish this task. (Set a timer.) If the group arranges itself in the correct order within the two minutes, it is awarded two points and a chance for a bonus (see next bullet). However, if it does not finish in 2 minutes or if it inaccurately completes the task, the other group receives a point. • If the group correctly completes the task in the time allotted, the teacher will reveal his/her number and give that group a chance to earn a bonus point if it can correctly place the teacher’s number in the correct location in line. • Once this group has completed its turn, students will return to their seats. You will write a new number on your index card, and the 2nd team will go to the front. This time, students will have to arrange their numbers in order from greatest to least, following the same rules. • After each group has had a turn, students will turn over their note cards and write a four-digit number on the other side. Repeat the same process with the four-digit numbers. • The group with the most points after a specified number of rounds is the winner. • Extension: While the students are standing in line, ask questions of them about who is greater or less than whom, etc.
