GQA Level 2 Certificate in Coating Technology 500/8511/6 Who is this qualification for? This qualification is primarily aimed at coatings industry employees embarking on technology orientated careers. There will also be those whose role requires a general insight into the industry, together with a basic understanding of coatings technology. Participants will normally be employed in laboratories or customer technical support roles. They may be new to the industry, or be part of an apprenticeship scheme. Individual units are also suitable for others in operational, managerial or support roles, where their work impinges upon wider industry or technical issues. In the context of this qualification, the term "Coatings", embraces paints, powder coatings, inks and resins. Units within this qualification cover an overview of the industry and its sectors; the general properties and application techniques of coatings; their composition; fundamental chemistry; application and evaluation techniques. Practical safety health and environment issues are also included. The unit concerning “Employment Rights and Responsibilities” is a detailed coatings industry induction module. It is not expected that all candidates undertake identical activities. The qualification is therefore, structured to ensure a high degree of flexibility. However, there are common units in the mandatory section of the qualification, applicable to all candidates. The qualification is part practical, but is largely based upon a programme of tutor led academic study modules. This qualification should be undertaken by those who can demonstrate they are either fully trained in the issues covered, or are undertaking supervised guided learning programmes. Candidates must show they are able to undertake the practical elements of each unit under minimal supervision. Further qualifications in coatings technology are also available, at levels 3 to 5, covering more advanced practical and theoretical issues, as certificates, also an advanced, level 5 diploma. Candidates for this qualification could be assessed in the context of laboratory environments or technical departments within a wide variety of paint, powder, ink or resin manufacturers, users or suppliers. The academic knowledge content of each module may be assessed by written examination, computer marked or other assignments subject to GQA Approval Candidates for this qualification will primarily be:    

NB: These titles apply, generally, to the Paint, Powder Coatings, Inks and Resin market sectors of the industry What is required from candidates? QCF qualifications are made up of a number of units that have a credit value or credits. The units are made up of the things you need to know and the things you need to be able to do to carry out your job safely and correctly. These are called Learning Outcomes, and all must be met to achieve the unit. This qualification is made up of 3 mandatory units, totalling 12 credits and a group of optional units. Candidates should achieve all of the mandatory units listed below and a minimum of 9 credits from the group of optional units. This gives the qualification a minimum value of 21 credits. Achieving all of the Mandatory units and the minimum number of credits will mean the qualification has been completed and GQA will provide the Certificate with the qualification title. Where a candidate has completed additional credits the Certificate will list these as “additional credits”, where a candidate has not completed the full qualification and will not go on to do so, a Certificate of Unit credit can be issued for the units achieved. Assessment guidance Evidence should show that you can complete all of the learning outcomes for each unit being taken. Types of evidence: Evidence of performance and knowledge is required. Evidence of performance should be demonstrated by activities and outcomes, and should be generated in the workplace only, unless indicated under potential sources of evidence (see below). Evidence of knowledge can be demonstrated through performance or by responding to questions.
