READING
MATH
Fables and Folktales We have completed our Opinion/Persuasive Unit and are beginning our unit on Fables and Folktales! We will be learning about all the elements of Fables. We will discuss the characters and identify their traits, feelings, and motivations in a story. We will discuss the setting, plot, message, moral, conflict and resolution in each story. We will be able to describe how the characters contribute to the events and the lesson in the story. We will also discuss different points of view in each story. You can ask your child at night to tell you about the Fable or Tale we read in class and the lesson they learned. They can tell you how that particular lesson is purposeful to them and in real life.
We have started our next chapter in math. This is a combination of chapters 7, 8, and 9. These chapters focus on Multiplication and Division of larger numbers. More specifically, students will be multiplying and dividing 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. They will be required to regroup and will learn about remainders. Once we have mastered computation of these numbers, we will move on to solving multiplication and division real world word problems. Students will be required to use bar models in order to help them solve these problems. It is important that your child continues to practice his/her multiplication tables each night in order to be successful in this unit.
SOCIAL STUDIES
WRITING Fables and Floktales After our publishing party on March 6th, we will begin constructing our Fables and Folktales Response to Literature. We will be writing a response to one of the many stories we will be reading and discussing in class. Our writing piece will include choosing a book we read in class, answering a question for that book, and writing a response. We will be given the opportunity to respond to many Fables. Once we have a compilation of such responses throughout the unit, we will make a decision as to which response we will take through the publishing process.
We are continuing our case study of Egypt. During this case study, we will be focusing on the geography and culture of Egypt. Students will complete document based writing activities and will apply their knowledge of Egypt to rigorous group related tasks.
SCIENCE In Science, we are studying Heat, Light, and Sound. The big idea is that heat, light, and sound are different forms of energy that can move from place to place. We will discuss these forms of energy and their relevance to our everyday lives. We will also conduct experiments to study how different types of materials conduct heat, how light travels and how rainbows form. You can ask your child to tell you about the experiments that we perform in class to reinforce the lessons.
