1 Peter 3:8 — "be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate, be humble"

In the expression of sharing the love of Christ the youth will be hosting a blanket workshop to make soft, fleece lap blankets for the Cancer center in Elkins on Sunday, May 6th following the morning worship service in Fellowship Hall. They would like to invite those who may have an interest in making the blankets. These are no sew, hand tie lap fleece. The fleece has been prepped for the workshop and only requires cutting and tying. Anyone who crochets, knits, and/or quilts and would like to make a lap blanket for the center is welcome to do so. We can collect and deliver them. Blankets can also be made for Project Linus. These are for children battling cancer. Their Website is: www.projectlinus.org. The chapter in Morgantown gives blankets to seriously ill and traumatized children.

Rev. Scott Hamby Graduation Looks to the Future May is here and it brings sunshine, warm temperatures, flowers, hope, the end of school, and of course, graduation. Regardless of whether you have someone graduating or not, this event always causes us to look back to our own life and then forward to what is next. This evaluation is very healthy as a benchmark for what we have accomplished and what we need to accomplish in the future. As we evaluate our own lives, it compels us to compile advice for those young, exuberant students who are ready to take on the world and make a difference. What advice would you give? I am sure if this blog were in real-time, I would be getting items like: budget well, serve others, set goals, continue education, do not forget where you came from, and be kind and compassionate among many others. All very good recommendations. If we could ask Jesus, what do you think he would say? I think we have to go to the written Word to sift some recommendations. First, “Be holy, as I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15 is a good place to start. In a world that embraces and celebrates evil and self above all others, holiness will satisfy the souls’ cravings and yield humility to bring about wise choices and good actions. Be holy. Second, “If I…but do not have love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13 love is tied for first place with holiness. Love, that is—agape, is the way Jesus lived his life and gave his life. The God-head is the source of love, a love so amazing. A love that led to sacrifice, put others first, was slow to anger, and makes reason possible. Live loving. Third, “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” Matthew 6 records Jesus’ teaching on how we ought to pray which leads us to bend our will to his, causing us to trust in him, and allows us to never be anxious for anything. All that God has for us will be given to us if we seek his kingdom before anything else like a spouse, a career or family. God first. Fourth, “lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him.” Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us perhaps the most profound wisdom of all. We must give our lives over to God and trust his knowledge over our own. I have not met anyone yet who would not say there have been times in their life when they took control and made a mess of things. Regret is always the consequence. Missed blessing is always the penalty. Rebuilding is always the result. Heed the wisdom and submit to his will and follow his guidance. Trust the

Holy Spirit. Fifth, “not neglecting to meet together.” Hebrews 10:25 brings forward a crucial point to surviving life. The verse goes on to say “encouraging one another.” Always be an active part of Christ body, the church. The church is your strongest support group, greatest help and resource and the vehicle through which your kingdom service is accomplished. In church one should be refreshed, encouraged, loved, accepted, bonded, united, etc. The list goes on. The point: church family is where eternity is lived temporally. Without it, you are truly alone. Get connected. Certainly there is much more advice Jesus would give, but these are a great place to start. In fact, these are great points for anyone, not just graduates. No matter where you are in life, it is not too late to put these in to practice. Let us run the race together…
