The C50H10 hemispherical polyarene 1 has been synthesized as a seed to be used in the development of metal-free C2-accretion methods for the growth of single-index (5,5) carbon nanotubes.1-6 Pentabenzocorannulene (2) has been synthesized as a candidate for surface-catalyzed cyclodehydrogenation (SCCD) to give a metal-bound seed from which to grow (5,5) carbon nanotubes by traditional metal-catalyzed SWNT growth methods. Syntheses of 1 and 2 will be presented, together with reports on progress toward their conversion to (5,5) carbon nanotubes.7-13
