NEWS: Welcome to guest RMD Executive Administrator Nancy Wiehagen, who is visiting local clubs, and also planning for the March 1-3, 2019 Mid-Year Conference to be held at the Colorado Springs Marriott. Volunteers will be needed. She’s also promoting new clubs for the Rocky Mt. Region.
PROGRAM: Salvation Army’s Donor Relations Director Derek Wilson summarized generational differences. He quoted, “Those who criticize a generation, forget who raised it.” He presented world events that affected formative years and subsequent experiences. For the first time in history, 7 generations survive, with 5 in the workplace. Based on research, he described characteristics from the Greatest Generation (1901-1927), who value hard work and religion, to Generation Alpha (2011-2025), who will value technology, formal education and will experience commercial space flight. Generation Y or Millenials (19811997), at 80 million strong, are the largest ever and less likely to marry or participate in religion. Derek believes 9-11 and global terrorism has had a profound effect on values, especially for Generation Z (19982010). He added that research shows marriage makes a group stronger. The Silent Generation (1928-1945) was skipped for the Presidency, with Clinton, G. W. Bush, Obama and Trump all Boomers (1946-1964). Time was up and we wanted more! Nancy added, “If you return, give us ideas for engaging these groups in Kiwanis.” She suggested making younger groups “project members,” participating in events, not attending meetings.
