Have you ever wondered how to make your dining room look more inviting? The dining room is a multi-purpose place, it is where you and your family feast, the hub of entertaining friends and evening snacks. 1. ASSESS YOUR DINING ROOM I often remind my clients that they need to make a floor plan to make any space beautiful. Arranging the table, chairs and the server can make or break the look of the room. A common mistake is choosing a dining room rug that is too small for the rise and fall of the chairs. The chairs should not fall off the rug when they are tucked in. Don’t crowd in your space! In order to get up safely you need 24”- 36” for the chairs to move away from the table and the wall. Furniture should fit the scale of your room. If the table is too small or big for the room, your dining room will feel off balance. 2. CHOOSE A WOW FACTOR CHANDELIER Lighting your dining room properly creates a wonderful focal point. Chandeliers are like jewelry for the room. They provide that interesting element to the room as well as providing a beautiful and functional look. I prefer to put a chandelier on a dimmer switch to help create softness for a more romantic dinner or special supper. The dimmer switch can also be used to full power for crafts, sewing, playing games etc. A guideline for hanging a chandelier is 30 to 34 inches above the table. If your ceiling is over 8 feet high you can add to the chain to keep it to the correct height over your table. 3. CHOOSE ACCESSORIES WISELY Accessories in the dining room tell a story about you. The next most important accessory is your art and its placement. Mixing and matching canvas art with metal candle sconces or metal art makes for a more interesting room. You can place pictures of your favorite trips on the wall. Plants can add that necessary green touch. My favorite accessories for dining rooms are: reeds in a set of vases, large bamboo trees, flowers (fresh preferred) or artificial and unique colored vases on the table. I also love adding kinetic lighting like candles or an electric fireplace on a focal wall. Mirrors act like another window in the space. They reflect the outdoor view and doubles the impact of the chandelier in room. The options are endless to create the dining room you have always wanted.
