The men’s basketball team went 2-1 last week to improve to 11-16 on the season. and 4-12 in Sun Confernce action. The Gyrenes began the week with a 72-54 win over Florida Memorial before beating Thomas at home on Thursday, 83-77. The Gyrenes were unable to complete the week sweep, falling at Southeastern on Saturday, 58-54. Brandon Dean averaged 15.3 points and three rebounds over the three games. He scored a career-high 24 points in the Blue and Green’s win over Thomas on Thursday and had 16 points in AMU’s win over Florida Memorial on Tuesday. The Gyrenes return to the court on Thursday night when they welcome Northwood to Tom Golisano Field House. Prior to the game, AMU will honor its two seniors.
The women’s basketball team went 2-1 last week against TSC opponents. AMU defeated Florida Memorial 87-65. All five starters scored in double figures led by Yvanessa Vincent (17 pts, 12 reb.) and Annie Artise (11 pts., 11 reb.) who both had a double-double. In the second game of the week, the Lady Gyrenes defeated Thomas University 79-60. In the lone road game on the week, the Lady Gyrenes were defeated 81-50 by St. Thomas. Lauren Gillingham had a strong week as she averaged 14.3 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the three games. The Lady Gyrenes will host Northwood University on Thursday night. On Saturday afternoon, the Blue and Green will play at Warner University to finish the regular season.
Baseball finished this past week with a 2-2 record, picking up back to back wins against Florida Memorial and Northwood University before dropping a double header to Northwood on Saturday. Austin Munn threw a complete game to pick up the Gyrene’s first Sun Conference win of 2015, striking out 13 and allowing only one run. Tucker Starkey had a huge week at the plate going 8-17, scoring six runs, and blasting three home runs over the course of the week. Coming up this week the Gyrenes will travel to division II Eckerd College for a midweek game before hosting a Sun Conference series with Webber International this weekend at Bowie’s Ballpark.
The Ave Maria softball team swept Edward Waters on Saturday to improve to 4-4 on the young season. The Lady Gyrenes took game one 6-3 and won game two of the twin bill with a 4-1 decision. The Lady Gyrenes return to the field next weekend when they host Eckerd on Saturday and Tampa on Sunday. In game one, Cheyenne Benson pitched five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five. Emily Lemin picked up the win in game two, pitching seven innings of one-run ball. She allowed six hits and struck out two. The one run allowed was unearned. Kingsley Avery had a solid day at the plate, finishing four-for -seven with a triple and four runs scored.

The Ave Maria women’s lacrosse team will begin its inaugural season on Saturday when they travel to Melbourne, Fla., to take on NCAA DII Florida Tech. The Lady Gyrenes are coached by head coach Kelly Buikus and will be playing in the National Women’s Lacrosse League. The Blue and Green will make their home debut on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when they welcome in third-ranked Davenport out of Grand Rapids, Mich. The Lady Gyrenes will play a road heavy schedule in their first season with just three home games on nine away from Ave Maria. Six of the Lady Gyrenes’ 12 matches will take place in Georgia..
The Ave Maria tennis teams dropped a pair of road matches last week at St. Thomas and at Southeastern. The women’s team fell to St. Thomas 8-1 before falling to Southeastern 6-3. On the men’s side, the Gyrenes dropped an 8-1 decision at St. Thomas before falling to Southeastern 9-0. Both teams return to action on Saturday when they welcome Webber International to the AMU for a 12 p.m. start. On Saturday against Southeastern, Marianna Vargas and Mary Kate Lee won at one doubles 8-5. They both also won their singles matches to claim AMU’s three points. Playing at one singles, Vargas defeated her opponent 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. At two singles, Lee won 6-5, 7-6 (9-7).
The Men’s and Women’s Golf teams will return to the course for the first time this season when they travel to Babson Park for the 11th Annual Start 2 Finish Classic hosted by Webber International. The 54-hole tournament for the men and the 36-hole tournament for the women will be played at Lake Wales Country Club. In their last tournament of the fall, James Desanges led the Gyrenes with a tied for 25th place showing with a 36-hole score of 161. Desanges carded rounds of 82 and 79. On the women’s side, Sarah Notaro led the Blue and Green with a second round score of 92 to finish the tournament at 189 and in a tie for 15th place.
