The Ave Maria men’s basketball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday night when the Gyrenes fell to Webber International 71-59 in the opening round of the Sun Conference Tournament Play-In game. The Gyrenes end the season with an 11-19 overall record and a 4-14 mark in Sun Conference action. Noah Phillips and Johnny Minervino led the Blue and Green with nine points each. Exor Torres added eight points and four assists. Jelani Bonner finished with seven points and seven rebounds. On Sunday, the Sun Conference announced their postseason awards with Jelani Bonner taking home the Cazzie Rusell Champion of Character Award as well as earning second team All-Conference accolades.
The Ave Maria women’s basketball team finished their season last week with two games in The Sun Conference Tournament. In the first game, the Lady Gyrenes came away with a huge win, 70-69 over #2 seed Southeastern in the semifinals. Annie Artise led a balanced offensive attack for the Lady Gyrenes with 14 points and seven rebounds. Madison McDonald and Lauren Gillingham each added 12 points. In the quarterfinals, the Blue and Green were defeated by #3 Webber 67-56. The Lady Gyrenes were led by Artise with 16 points and seven rebounds. Prior to the tournament, Artise was named TSC AllSecond team. Artise was also named to the seven person All-Tournament Team for her performance in TSC Tournament.
The Ave Maria baseball team dropped a tight contest on Friday night at EmbryRiddle. Senior Ray Messner gave AMU a quality outing, going seven innings and allowing only four hits. Messner exited the game with seven strikeouts and only three walks. Weather was a factor on Saturday afternoon as the Gyrenes were only able to play game one of their scheduled double header with ERAU. The Gyrenes were outdone by the Eagles 7-2 before rain washed away the start of game two. Austin Comesanas took the loss for AMU in his first start of the year. The righty went seven full innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out three. Bobby Oliver and Ryan Keegan combined for the two RBIs on the day for the Gyrenes.
After dropping a pair of midweek games against NCAA Division I Oakland University, 4-3 and 11-0, the Lady Gyrenes went 2-3 at the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Blue and Gree began the classic with a 7-5 win against (RV) Corban before being defeated by (19) William Woods 10-0. On Saturday, the Lady Gyrenes defeated (11) Belhaven 12-5 to win Pool Five and advance to the gold bracket. In bracket play, Ave Maria fell in consecutive games to (1) AuburnMontgomery, 5-2, and (3) Reinhardt, 123. Alyssa Colding hit .409 (9-of-22) over seven games this week. She had three doubles, a triple, and a home run. She scored four runs and tallied seven RBI.

The Ave Maria Lacrosse team played their first home game against #3 Davenport last Wednesday afternoon; losing 1-22. Kaylin Mayeski scored the first goal in the history of the program with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Lydia Buckley had a strong game on the circle, with 11 draw controls. Abby Castro contributed four ground balls. Hannah Camerota had nine saves on the afternoon. AMU Lacrosse is currently 0-2 overall; 0-1 NWLL. This week the Lady Gyrenes will take on Reinhardt University on Wednesday at North Park, followed by two games in Davenport, Fla. on Friday afternoon against Point University and a Japanese International team.
The Ave Maria men’s and women’s tennis teams were both swept, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Northwood University. Northwood is ranked eighth on the women’s side and 15th on the men’s side in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 Polls. At one-doubles on the women’s side, Marianna Vargas and Mary Kate Lee fell 8-2, snapping a four match win streak for the doubles duo. Both the Ave Maria men’s and women’s tennis teams currently sit at 0-7 on the season with all matches coming against Sun Conference opponents. The tennis teams will welcome Lewis University (Tuesday) and Cornerstone University (Thursday) to the AMU Tennis Facility this week before heading to Orlando on Saturday to take on Aquinas College (Mich.).
The Ave Maria men’s golf team finished in fourth place (out of seven teams) at the 11th Annual Start 2 Finish Classic hosted by Webber International. The Blue and Green carded a third round score of 316 to finish with a three-round total of 956. Rhys Tosczak finished tied for 13th individually after tallying a final round even-par 72 to finish at 231. After an opening round 81, Tosczak improved in each round, carding a 78 in round two before todays 72. Playing the same tournament but 36-holes compared to 54, the women’s golf team finished in sixth place. Sarah Notaro led the way for the Blue and Green, carding a final round score of 88. She finished the tournament in 20th place individually.
