The Gyrene men’s basketball team dropped a pair of conference games this week. The Blue and Green fell midweek at home to second-ranked Embry-Riddle 56-34 before falling on the road to St. Thomas 56-52. Wendell Powell led AMU this week, averaging 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The senior scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards in the Gyrenes’ loss at St. Thomas. The Gyrenes sport the top defense in NAIA Division II, allowing just 56.5 ponts per game. They also rank first in total defensive rebounds, grabbing 27 defensive rebounds per game. The Blue and Green’s defense is holding opponents to 39.2 percent shooting from the floor which rankes fourth in the NAIA. AMU will take on Florida Memorial, Thomas, and Southeastern this week.
The Ave Maria women’s basketball team went 1-1 last week against TSC opponents. AMU defeated Embry- Riddle 87-65. Taylor Lindsey had a standout game scoring a career high 28 points. Four players scored in double figures. In the second game of the week, the Lady Gyrenes were defeated by St. Thomas 70-50. Lindsey had a strong week as she averaged 20.6 points, three steals, 2.5 assists and 6.5 rebounds in the two games. Annie Artise continues to be a threat on both ends of floor as she averaged 16.5 points and five rebounds on the week. The Blue and Green will play three conference games this week. The Lady Gyrenes will host Florida Memorial on Tuesday and Thomas on Thursday evening. On Saturday afternoon, the Blue and Green will play Southeastern in Lakeland, Fla.
The Ave Maria baseball team handled Clearwater Christian College in a three game series sweep this past weekend. Quality performances from the pitching staff carried the Gyrenes to game one and game three victories, while the offense powered the way in game two. The blue and green smashed four home runs on the weekend and the arms were able to spin their first shutout of the season in the back end of the Saturday double header. The baseball team will return to the diamond on Wednesday against Florida Memorial University at Bowie’s Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. before they make a trip to Northwood Universtiy this weekend for their first conference series.

The Ave Maria softball team went 2-2 at the 2015 Southern Challenge in Clermont this weekend. The Lady Gyrenes split on day one, defeating Point before falling to Webber International. On Saturday, AMU dropped their first game, a 2-0 loss to Middle Georgia, before besting Coastal Georgia 7-3 in game two to earn a day two split. Cheyenne Benson went 1-1 this week, having picked up the win against Point (Ga.) and taking a loss against Middle Georgia State. Against Point, Benson went the distance allowing seven hits and one unearned run over seven innings. She struck out seven and allowed one walk. On the week, she struck out 15 compared to just two walks. She allowed three runs, all unearned. The Blue and Green return home this weekend when they welcome Edward Waters for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Ave Maria tennis teams fell to visiting Warner University on Saturday afternoon. The men’s team fell 7-2 while the women’s side lost 6-3. On the women’s side, the duo of Marianna Vargas and Mary Kate Lee won their doubles match 8-4. Vargas went on to win at one-singles 6-3, 6-4 and Lee won at two-singles 6-2, 6-3 for AMU’s three points on the women’s side. For the men, Daniel Pardo and Zach Sadusky won at two-doubles 9-8 (9-7). Elais Zaghra won at one-singles 6-3, 6-2. Both the men’s and women’s squads will return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Miami Gardens to take on St. Thomas University at 1 p.m.
