With a pair of home wins over the weekend, the 17thranked Crusader volleyball team closed out the first half of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season tied for first place. Meanwhile, in another first-place battle, the Crusader men’s soccer team came up just short in the fleeting moments at Seattle Pacific. As for the rest of the NNU athletic teams, women’s soccer took to the road only to come home without a win, while the Crusader women’s golf team finished its fall season with a strong effort at the Dixie State Fall Invitational. VOLLEYBALL: After seeing a 12-match win streak snapped in a Top 25 match-up at Western Washington last weekend, the now 17th-ranked Crusaders got back to their winning ways with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-12 rout of Seattle Pacific on Thursday and a 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-13 win over Montana State Billings on Saturday. Elayna Rice turned in another big weekend for NNU with 11 kills and 12 digs against SPU and 13 kills and 10 digs versus MSUB. Thursday’s win was a total team effort, though, as 15 Crusaders saw the floor. Kendra Bodine recorded 11 kills and Andrea Terpstra added 10 kills in the win. Defensively, Taylor Roberts had 15 digs and Linnea Phillips added 12 digs, and setter Michelle Terpstra had 34 assists. Saturday night’s win was all about blocking for NNU — which leads the nation averaging 2.81 blocks per set — as the Crusaders recorded 19 points off blocks.

Andi Terpstra added 10 kills and 8 blocks, Michelle Terpstra had 37 assists, 11 digs and 6 blocks, and Roberts added in 22 digs in the win. MEN’S SOCCER: The week started well for NNU as the Crusaders blanked St. Martin’s 3-0 on Thursday. Fredy Razo had a pair of goals and redshirt freshman MarMadi shall Hartley scored his first collegiate goal in his first colleFarrell giate start. Hartley’s goal also happened to be the game-winner. Alfredo E. Ontiveros made 5 saves, earning his fifth shutout of the season. Then came the big one — No. 22 NNU at No. 6 Seattle Pacific on Saturday night for the GNAC lead. Tied through 81 minutes, the Falcons headed home the winner with 8:47 remaining for a 1-0 win. Ontiveros made 7 saves in goal for NNU, which slipped out of the Top 25 with the loss. Rice led NNU with 24 kills and 22 digs last week. 3-0 home victory over Simon Fraser on Oct. 4, the Crusader women went through a tough road trip that saw them fall 2-0 at Central Washington on Thursday and 6-1 at Seattle Pacific on Saturday. Lexi Fesenbek netted the lone goal of the week while Daniele Ortiz made a total of 9 saves in the two games. WOMEN’S GOLF: A brief fall season for the Crusader women’s golf team wrapped up in Utah early this week, as NNU tied for seventh in the 12-team Dixie State Fall Invitational. After firing a 340 on the first day, the Crusaders climbed the leaderboard with a second-round 332 to finish tied with Hawaii-Hilo at 88-over 672. Haley Gochnour shot back-to-back 7-over 80s for the 36-hole tournament to finish 15th (14-over 160), the top finish for NNU, while teammate Samantha Miller was one shot behind her in a tie for 16th at 15-over 161.
