Health Science Change of Major Overview This process is applicable to students once they take classes as a Clemson University student. Bridge students will be able to apply once they enroll at Clemson. Acceptance is not guaranteed. Student applications are reviewed for acceptance ONCE a year: The application will be available on the first day of class in the Fall semester and will close on the last day of class in the Fall semester. Applications will be reviewed over the holiday break between the Fall and Spring semesters. Students without an earned Clemson GPA can apply in that fall term as the GPA earned at the end of the first semester will be used. Students are required to check with the Health Science advisor in 309 Edwards for specific dates to ensure they are meeting deadlines within their intended application period. Students are admitted based on the following criteria: 1. Space in the program by cohort (graduation year) and concentration. Health Science is able to accommodate 100 students per cohort (freshman, sophomore, etc.) and most spaces are filled by freshmen who were directly accepted into the program. Health Science has an excellent retention rate which means that most students do not leave the program. Because of this, space is limited. There are typically a few open seats for Sophomores and historically, there has never been open seats for Juniors or Seniors . o Students have the best chance of being accepted if they apply during the first semester while enrolled at Clemson. In addition to space by cohort, available space by concentration within each cohort is also a determining factor for acceptance. o Available space for each cohort and concentration will not be known until final grades for the Fall semester are submitted. 2. GPA Once available space is determined, decisions are based on cumulative, Clemson earned, GPA. Applicants must earn a Clemson GPA by the time of review in order to apply. o Students new to Clemson can apply and their Fall GPA will be verified after Fall grades have been submitted. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be considered for review. o Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements are not considered. o Students with 50 hours or more earned credits must also have taken and passed the math requirement, statistics requirements, and science requirement per the general education requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog. Applicant GPA will be verified after Fall grades have been submitted. 3. Completed Credit Hours Students who do not have enough credits which count towards their degree to remain a fulltime student (12+ credits each semester) through graduation historically have not been accepted. Because of this, upper-class students or transfer students who are coming in with 30+ credit hours earned do not stand a good chance of being successful in the change of major process. Bridge students do not stand a good chance of being successful in the change of major process unless they plan to stay at Clemson for four years as the sophomore cohort will probably still be full and the junior cohort is full at the point they enroll on main campus and can apply. Please note that very few students will change out from Health Science to other majors once they start upper division courses (sophomores, juniors, or seniors) and generally the seats from students who do change are covered by the Transfer students we accept directly into Health Science.
Other Recommended Majors Biological Sciences Biological Sciences with an emphasis in pre-rehabilitation sciences (the four year program) Food Science with an emphasis in Nutrition and Dietetics Psychology Sociology Secondary Education teaching in Science or Math For students interested in Health Services Administration, pre-business. If the student is interested in professional school of any kind (medical, dental, OT, PT, PA, etc.) they can do that with ANY undergraduate major as long as they take the appropriate prerequisite courses, which differ depending on the type of professional program and even on the school.
Students can also normally go on to get a Masters of Health Administration (MHA), recommended for our Health Services Administration students eventually anyway, or Masters of Public Health with any undergraduate degree. This may or may not require the completion of a few prerequisites for the MHA, which are normally business courses only.
