Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE January 25-28, 2012 Absolute Right and Wrong—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): Say: I want my children to be successful and fulfilled as adults. One characteristic about you that makes me think you’ll be successful is . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Jeremiah 22:1-5. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of this passage. Truth • God defines absolute right and wrong and describes how we should live through His Word. Untruths • You can do anything you want because there are no absolutes. • Being tolerant means you can’t force your rules on someone else. • God can’t hold you accountable because He doesn’t exist. 3. Explore Scripture: Read Jeremiah 22:1-5 aloud. Share that these verses represent God’s specific message for a royal family and were designed to help them know how to treat others as they led a nation. Explain that God’s Word is right and that He wants us to live by it. Emphasize that His Word also includes penalties for doing wrong. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this activity. 5. Nail It Down: Explain that there are absolutes established by God. Say: There are blessings for living within His guidelines and penalties for living outside His plan. Share that God wants to fellowship with us and to bless us. Point out that His limitations protect us and guide us. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead the prayer today. 7. Blessing: Say: May the members of this family be known as people who follow God’s guidelines for right and wrong. Parent Tip: As a parent, you are called to serve as the model for you teenager. Consider your own attitude toward moral absolutes and what that attitude may be teaching your teen. Talk with your teenager about how each of you can learn to trust God and His plan for right and wrong.
