Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE November 27-29, 2011 Creator of All—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): Say: We’ve all probably said something like, “In a few years, we’ll laugh about this situation.” Something I can laugh about now, though it wasn’t funny at the time, is . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Job 38:1-11. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of this passage. Truth • God created the earth, seas, heaven, and all that exists. Untruths • There is no God. • Evolution explains why God had no real role in making the world. • Even if God did create everything, He’s not really worried about me. 3. Explore Scripture: Explain that Job was humbled as he was reminded that God created the earth, seas, heaven, and all that exists without help or counsel from human beings. Share that no matter how much human beings know about the earth, there is still significant knowledge yet to be discovered. Say: Scientists make new discoveries about the earth, skies, and seas on a daily basis, but new discoveries are not new to God. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this activity. 5. Nail It Down: Ask: What did you know in seventh grade that you didn’t know in kindergarten? Discuss responses. Say: Many seventh graders look down on kindergartners for their limited knowledge. Explain that high school seniors tend to look down on seventh graders for the same reason, while college students may look down high school seniors. Say: It’s interesting how we always discover that we really don’t know as much as we thought we knew. Point out that Job had the same experience and was humbled by a great and awesome God. Emphasize again the way God showed His love and concern to Job through the entire situation. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead today’s prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: May you realize a special blessing each time you remember that God created the skies, stars, earth, and everything that exists. Parent Tip: Sometime this week, share Psalm 19:1 with your family. Encourage family members to suggest ways they see God through creation. Work together as a family to memorize this verse.
