Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections
PA R ENTS PAGE October 26-29, 2011 Serving in the World—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a teenager goes first): When it’s your turn, say: Family trips are among my special memories as well. I think my favorite trip was the time we . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Luke 10:25-37 and Mark 10:45. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these passages. Truth • Believers should serve the lost with humble love based on the example of Christ. Untruths • Unbelievers get what they deserve, and I don’t plan to interfere. • Immoral people are gross, and I always avoid them. • I am special since I am religious, and I expect to be treated that way. 3. Explore Scripture: Read aloud Luke 10:25-30. Explain that the 18-mile road between Jerusalem and Jericho was well known as a place where robbers hung out. Read aloud Luke 10:31-32. Ask: In our day, what are some excuses believers might give for refusing to serve unbelievers? Read Luke 10:33. Remind your family that the Jews considered Samaritans half-breeds and separated from God. Note in verse 37 that the Jewish leader would not even say the word “Samaritan.” Read aloud verses 34-37. Say: Jesus shared this parable to teach believers how to be a leader by serving everyone, including the lost. Point out that the money left with the innkeeper was probably worth about 30 cents. Say: The Samaritan may have been very poor, but he refused to use that as an excuse for not showing a servant’s heart. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Read aloud Mark 10:45. Say: If you wonder if you should serve lost people, just look at the example of Christ. He didn’t demand to be served, and He performed the ultimate act of service by laying down his life for unbelievers. 6. Pray: A teenager will lead this prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: I bless this family for offering servant love to the world. Parent Tip: Teens can find a lot of opportunities to serve others through community service, youth mission trips, and such. But what about your entire family? Identify ways your family can serve others together and commit to following through on one of those ideas this month.
