Pre-Existing Relationships As a Fan & Supporter of FGCU Athletics it is important to understand what the NCAA defines as a pre-exiting relationship. The NCAA refers to the following four questions when trying to establish a pre-existing relationship with a prospective student-athlete or current student-athlete. 1. Did your relationship between the athlete (or the athlete's parents) develop as a result of the athlete's participation in athletics or notoriety related thereto? 2. Did your relationship between the athlete (or the athlete's parents) predate the athlete's status as a prospective student-athlete? 3. Did your relationship between the athlete (or the athlete's parents) predate the athlete's status achieved as a result of his or her athletics ability or reputation? 4. Was the pattern of benefits provided by the individual to the athlete (or the athlete's parents) prior to the athlete attaining notoriety as a skilled athlete similar in nature to those provided after attaining such stature? If the answer to any of the above questions is “no” then there is no established pre-existing relationship that would be recognized by the NCAA. Unfortunately, even if the answers above are all “yes” that still does not mean that you may provide a student-athlete or their parents/guardians with any extra benefit. All benefits received by student-athletes must be the same benefits provided to them before they became prospective student-athletes. Remember if you have any questions about what is permissible contact the FGCU Compliance Office (239)-5907573.

Occasional Meals Occasional meals may be provided to student-athletes as per NCAA rules. The NCAA defines an occasional meal as a meal in which a student-athlete or entire team in a sport receive a meal in the locale of FGCU on infrequent and special occasions from an institutional staff member. Below are some of the guidelines .  

FGCU defines infrequent as no more than two times per month. An FGCU staff member is permitted to provide reasonable local transportation to student-athletes for them to attend occasional meals.

A person with athletics interest may provide occasional meals to a studentathlete or the entire team in any sport on infrequent and special occasions as long as the following conditions are met:  The meal can only be provided at the individuals home, on campus, or at a facility used for home competition Alex Massé Director of Compliance [email protected] Andrea Miller Compliance Coordinator [email protected]

10501 FGCU Blvd S Fort Myers, FL 33965

 

The meal may be catered at one of the listed locations. Reasonable local transportation may be provided to student-athletes so that they can attend the meal, but only if the meal is at the home of the individual.

Occasional meals may not be provided to student-athletes until the meal has been approved by the Compliance Office. It is important to contact the coaching staff before making meal arrangements because again occasional meals are limited to only 2 times per month and coaches tend to use their allotted meals each month. Remember always ask before you act!

As a representative of athletics interest you are not permitted to provide extra benefits for student-athletes, their family members or their friends. This includes student-athletes not participating in the event for example a volleyball player at a basketball game. You may not provide meals, preferred seating, or any other type of benefit along these lines to studentathletes, their family members or friends.
