Tutorial Support

Using a computer at college

Your personal tutor will support and monitor your academic progress and your punctuality and attendance. Through regular individual interviews your tutor will work with you to help you set yourself targets to improve and achieve your educational goals.

ID Policy All students of the College are issued with ID cards. The ID card system proves that you are a genuine College student and protects us all from intruders. You will not be allowed into the College without your ID card.

Disabled students and/or those with learning difficulties The College is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment. We aim to make the most of every student’s learning opportunities. It is important to us that disabled students, including those with learning disabilities, feel welcome and are supported throughout their time at College.

Support with Maths and English (including English for speakers of other languages) All full-time students, and many studying part-time, are assessed for support needs during induction. If your tutor considers you need support with your English or number skills she/he will refer you for further assessment with a support tutor. Support is always aimed at helping you to do your very best on your main course. Sometimes it will be built into your main course, or you might be offered it in a small group

All students have access to College ICT systems and a College ICT account. You will be asked to agree to the College’s ICT Acceptable Use Policy before you can access these facilities.

If you have any problems with the computer or forget your password, the first thing to do is to tell your Tutor or a member of the Library staff.

External Computer Access To access email or my.candi from outside the college you can log onto the internet and type www. candi.ac.uk into the browser. You will be asked for your username and password, use the same one you use at College to log on to the PC.

Library Each of the main College Centres has a Library to support you with coursework and assignments as well as offering you a place to study. Staff are available to help you with any queries or if you need assistance with using the equipment. We can show you how to use your College email, support and help you with Moodle and show you how to get the best from online resources.

Student Union City and Islington College Student Union encourages every student to have a voice in all aspect of College life and offers a variety of events and exciting social opportunities outside of lessons. What makes our Student Union so important is that all students are a member, it is led by students and every student has the opportunity to get involved.

Child Care Want to Make a Difference? Why not improve your own skills, help the local community and improve your employment prospects by getting involved in our many volunteering opportunities.

Want to Save Money? Buy a NUS Extra Card from our Student Union and save hundreds of pounds online from www.nus.org. uk/NUS-Extra or bring a photo and £10 to College and buy the card direct from our Student Reps.

Enrichment Activities As well as studying hard we hope you will have lots of fun. We want your time at the College to be exciting and life-enhancing. Enrichment activities are a great opportunity to meet and mix with other students and staff and to make new friends. You can use these activities to build up your CV (record them on your ‘my future’ section of my.candi.ac.uk) they’re just what universities and employers want to hear about!

Financial Support You may be able to get an allowance of up to £30 per week, as long as you have 100% attendance and

The College provides full day nurseries at the Centre for Business, Arts and Technology and at the Centre for Lifelong Learning; £1.50 morning and £1 afternoon session. These nurseries have a limited number of places. It is our aim to support as many students as possible. However, demand is very high and not all applications will be successful. Student Advice We can provide help with practical issues such as financial worries, tuition fees, studying while on benefits, leaving home and emergency accommodation, basic immigration issues and referral to specialist agencies for refugees and asylum seekers and other practical concerns.

Personal Counselling If you have any personal or emotional difficulties, have a specific concern or a general feeling that things are not OK while you are at College, then it may be helpful to talk them through with a counsellor. Our team includes qualified and experienced counsellors who will offer you a confidential space in which to explore and understand what is going on.

Careers Guidance/Connexions Service As well as getting the best out of your course and achieving good results, you will want to plan your next steps and think about your

future career. Our careers education programmes will help you make the right choices - whether it is to apply to university or to find the right job.

Health & Safety Your tutor will inform you about the College Health and Safety policies and procedures during your induction.

What if things go wrong? Changing Programme If you wish to change your programme of study you should discuss this with your tutor and where appropriate seek guidance from the careers staff in your Centre.

Unsatisfactory Behaviour or Performance When students do not fulfil their responsibilities and break the College Learning and Behaviour Agreement through not attending classes or completing work or through behaviour that disrupts College life, formal action is taken using the College Student Disciplinary Policy. Where a serious incident and breach of the Learning and Behaviour Agreement has occurred the College may exclude students.

Complaints If you have a concern you should first discuss the matter with your tutor. Most problems can be resolved at this stage. If you wish to make a formal complaint you should complete a Student Feedback Form available: •Online via my.candi.ac.uk and sent to [email protected] •From the Centre offices.

Appealing Against the Marking of Exams or Coursework Very occasionally a student may believe their exam or coursework has been inaccurately assessed.

There are internal and College regulations governing when and how students can appeal. Students who have any concerns about marked work should see their tutor in the first instance.

Data Protection To comply with the law, information must be collected and used fairly, stored safely, not disclosed to any other person unlawfully and any data relating to an individual is disposed of safely. To do this, the College must comply with the Data Protection Act principles, which are set out in the DPA 1998. The draft Data Protection Policy can be found on my.candi. If you do not want your data shared for the purposes of surveys and research or do not want to be contacted about courses or learning opportunities please make the Centre office aware and they will update your records. If you are 16-18 years old, we reserve the right to contact your parent/guardian in relation to your progress, unless advised otherwise by you. Please talk to your tutor in the first instance if you wish to withhold this information. If an employer is paying your fees, we reserve the right to contact your employer in relation to your progress.
