Bloke at the back
He’s a silver fox
It’s safe to say martin Kemp has done it all. Rising to fame as Spandau Ballet’s bassist alongside frontman Tony Hadley, he made the leap to acting and landed roles as notorious gangster Reggie Kray and albert Square’s Steve owen. and now, martin, 54, has a role in Birds Of A Feather, playing man-eater Dorien’s latest conquest, Vincent. Dad to Harley moon and Roman, martin lives in London with his wife Shirlie.
I used to go to drama school with Linda Robson and Pauline Quirke, so being on Birds Of A Feather felt like a little reunion. They asked me to do it and anything that makes me laugh out loud when i read it is a no-brainer. The show’s become a British institution, and since its return it’s been even bigger than the first time around. In one of my scenes, me and Dorien, played by Lesley Joseph, have sex in the back of a hearse. it was probably one of the funniest things i’ve done for ages. i hadn’t worked with Lesley before, but we had met and had such a great time filming. The recent Spandau Ballet tour went really well. When we first started it was just going to be three months, but it went on for the best part of a year, which is fantastic. it’s so nice that a lot of people still want to come and see the show.

It’s not too hard being away from home now, but it used to be. nowadays, technology like Skype and iPads have made it easier. my kids have all left home now, so they don’t worry about me, but my wife is on her own – we’ve both got empty nest syndrome.
