Joplin Church of the Nazarene District HIGHLIGHTS Winter 2014-2015 Joplin District Ministry Team,
Rev. Mark Bane District Superintendent
Once, while pastoring in early January, I asked my congregation, “Wouldn’t you like to have a new pastor?” (I had pastored the church for 12 years at that point) No one responded with an uplifted hand or a shout of victory. Although there were surely some who would have responded, had they been honest, but I was happy they didn’t publically. I continued, “To be perfectly honest with you, I wouldn’t mind having a new church.” Now that got their attention. I gave them a few awkward seconds to ponder, wait for it… and finally I said, “Why don’t we just let God remake us both, pastor and congregation, today and we can save a lot of moving expenses and heartache?”
As a culture, we have the idea that January 1st is the right time to think about significant transitions or changes in our lives. It is a good time to transition. However, the reality for the believer is that any day we recognize a need for adjustment, a deficiency that needs to be corrected or direction that needs to change in life or ministry, God is eager to help us in that transition “instantly”. We can all remember that first experience with God when the old became new and we were transformed in our heart, mind and behavior. The Apostle Paul suggests that type of significant transformation should be normative or even daily. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” II Corinthians 4:16 NIV Benjamin Franklin said, “How few there are who have courage enough to own their faults and resolution enough to mend them.” You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream. C S Lewis. As we begin a New Year I want you to know that you are loved and prayed for. Each pastor and each church is on my daily prayer list. I am grateful for every pastor and leader on our district. Thank you for the good work you have done, from the Lead Pastors to the Staff to lay leaders to committed laypeople, who have worked in step with the Holy Spirit, to impact your Church so that your Church could impact your community this past year. We have had a great 2014 in almost every way. Please take a few minutes and answer a few questions we should ask of ourselves this year.
What is God asking me to add to my life this year and this day? What thing is God asking me to release that is hindering my walk with Him? How does God want to change me to insure my life, ministry and church are fulfilling the great commission which is to make Christ-like Disciples?
Excited about all He wants to do through us in 2015, Mark J Bane
...and Weekend Retreat: February 27-March 1
Nazarene Missions International President, Rhonda Rhoades 258 Park Rd., Garnett, KS 66032
are entering the last quarter of our church year—January, February and WeMarch. Its time for each church and president to double-check your annual goals and see where you stand. Celebrate the areas in which you are excelling, and expend the needed energy to shore up areas in which you are falling short. Be ready by the end of March to close out the year with all goals met.
January Emphasis Welcome to Mission Corps—an opportunity to serve with the Church of the Nazarene. As we reach out around the world, our missionaries are being challenged to meet the many needs around them. People are responding from every age group and career background with a variety of skills, gifts, and talents to help meet those needs. The church has several Volunteer related sites: Work & Witness; NYI Volunteer Internships; RV’s on a Mission (R.O.A.M.); Nazarene Healthcare Ministries; Jesus Film; One Heart Many Hands; Nazarene Disaster Relief; and NazServe. If you want more information on one of these service areas, ask your local president for the information on page 58 of the President’s Resource Book.
Work & Witness Remember that there is a Planning & Information Meeting for the 2015 Joplin District Work & Witness trip on Saturday, January 10 at 10:30 A.M. at the Joplin District Ministry Center in Carthage, MO. The project is in Inez, Kentucky from July 10—18, 2015. For further information contact Don Daniel (417-724-2997) or at
[email protected].
February Emphasis Alabaster— “The Alabaster Offering, used for buildings throughout the world, is based on a beautiful story of sacrificial love.” Since Alabaster funds provide buildings, why not go on an Alabaster Architectural Alphabet Scavenger Hunt. You may want to look for every letter of the alphabet, but pay close attention to the letters in alabaster. You could use image -editing software to edit and combine them or print the individual pictures and mount them on poster board. No matter how you display them, it will be a fun way to promote Alabaster toyour congregation!
March Emphasis NAZARENE WORLD WEEK OF PRAYER March 1-7, 2015 Specific prayer requests for each region will be featured on the Prayer Mobilization Line during the Nazarene Week of Prayer and can be found on the NMI Web site (www.nazareneminissions.org) Page 61 of the President’s Resource Book has additional information.

NYC 2015 Bundles of Hope The teens from the district will be attending NYC 2015 in July. We will be collecting baby items to take with us to NYC. We would LOVE to be able to fill a trailer with these baby items to take with us to love on the people of Louisville. Baby items that are needed: -Diapers in all sizes -Baby Wipes -Baby Blankets -Burp Cloths -Baby Shampoo -Baby Lotion -Diaper Cream -Pacifiers If you can donate any of the following items, we will take them with us to Louisville in July. Last NYC, with all of the items that were collected, we were able to supply the city for 6 months. How awesome would it be if we can help to contribute enough supplies to get the outreach ministry through a whole year?!?! Our God is awesome! We will be collecting these supplies at EMPOWER in March, at Teen Camp in June, and when we leave in July.
