HISTORY OF ΣΑΕ CHAPTER AT LOYOLA On March 8, 1856, eight young men founded the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Since then, ΣΑΕ has expanded onto 240 campuses in the United States and Canada. Today, there are over 295,000 members worldwide, making it the largest social fraternity in the world. This organization made its way onto the campus of Loyola University Chicago in 1983, only to close in the fall of 1998. However, in the fall of 1999, a few men began the process of creating a new ΣΑΕ chapter. On March 8, 2000, the new Illinois Alpha-Omega chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was born. The 19 men who restarted the Illinois Alpha-Omega chapter at Loyola University Chicago wanted to establish a rich tradition based on the ideals of ΣΑΕ and our school. This Fall is truly an exciting time, because you are being given the opportunity to join an organization thriving on 155 years of tradition. With our national headquarters only 10 minutes away, we are afforded many unique opportunities and are given unending support. You can play a role in shaping Loyola’s chapter into something you want it to be. We are seeking men who are not only involved on campus and in the community, but who are looking to be a part of a fraternity that breaks all stereotypes, one that is based on making the most of your college career and becoming a True Gentleman. BE TRUE!

THE TRUE GENTLEMAN The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct

proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

- John Walter Wayland (VA-OM 1899)

Sigma Alpha Epsilon will not only teach you to become a better man, but will prepare you for the world outside of your collegiate career.” - Former Member “The Gentleman of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Loyola breaks the common “Animal House” stereotype that Fraternities commonly face. They know how to work hard and play hard. They are outstanding role models on this campus, genuinely great guys, and have been one of the best organizations on campus for as long as I have taught here.” - Loyola Professor “While the Loyola chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is proud of its accomplishments, we know that our service, scholastic, and campus goals still lie ahead of us.
