The name “Chipping” is derived from the Old English “ceping”, which means “a market”. Once a market centre on the doorstep of the Royal hunting grounds at Leagram Hall, Chipping became a thriving village of manufacturing centred around the waterways. Dating back to the late 17th Century, the historic core of the village remains relatively unchanged, retaining it’s vernacular charm with narrow streets bound by a mixture of limestone buildings. The rich history and architectural elements remaining within the Kirk Mill area have recently been recognised by the designation of the Kirk Mill Conservation Area.

OPP O RTU N IT Y Planning has been granted to provide this comprehensive leisure environment, with the mill as the centrepiece, which dates from 1785 and still retains many original features including the water wheel and its gearing system that will be preserved. The adjoining dilapidated factory buildings are to be demolished to make way for a new extension that will combine traditional design with modern utility providing modern purpose built accommodation, whilst enhancing the character of the wider development and restoring the central part of the conservation area. The letting accommodation is to be divided between the Kirk Mill building, which will also house the bar restaurant, the converted 18th century former barn building, the Malt Kiln House and a new purpose built hotel and spa facility. The scheme is also to include a wedding venue, separate from the letting rooms, a Kids Club and Trailhead Centre which is intended to drive visitor numbers and expand the offering of the development.
