HOW TO CALCULATE DAILY CALORIES NEEDED The first thing you need is your client’s BMR. 1. Take the BMR and multiply by the activity level. a. Example: BMR=2250, Activity level=1.375. Total daily calories=3094 2. Take this number and multiply it by 7 (for 7 days in a week). a. Example: (3094)*(7)=21,658 This is the number of calories needed in a week. 3. Use the weekly number and subtract how many calories your client wants to lose in a week. Remember, there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. a. 21658 − 3500 = 18158 4. Decide approximately how many calories you want your client to have on their HIGH calorie day and subtract this from the result you just obtained. a. 18158 − 3000 = 15158 5. Decide approximately how many calories you want your client to have on their LOW calorie day and subtract this from the result you just obtained. a. 15158 − 1500 = 13658 6. Take this result and divide by the remaining number of days in a week (5). a.
13658 5
= 2732
7. The resulting number is the number of calories on the remaining days of the week you need to program for your client. 8. From the sample results above, the weekly diet for your client would look like the following: DAY # of Calories
Sunday 3500
Monday 2732
Tuesday 2732
Wednesday Thursday 2732 2732
Friday 2732
Saturday 1500
IF YOU STILL HAVE QUESTIONS ASK A CLASSMATE. IF THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS, WRITE DOWN YOUR QUESTIONS AND SAVE THEM FOR ME WHEN I RETURN. If you do not have a BMR for your client then you need to spend your time looking up foods and entering the grams of carbohydrates and grams of fat into your table. These should be foods your know your client likes to eat and you need to try to find healthy alternatives for some of the unhealthy foods.
