How to make a Faux Tintype in Photoshop 1. Open up a portrait photograph in photoshop 2. Convert it to grayscale by selecting Image → Mode → Grayscale 3. If need be, change the levels by going to Edit → Levels. To get a good tintype, you want to have some really good black levels in your photographs
4. In Image → Mode → Select Duotone. In the pop up menu, select Tritone. This means that three colors are going on the grayscale image instead of White, Black and Gray. 5. The first color, the default is black. If it is anything different from black, find click on color square and find a black to use. 6. For the second color, click on the second color blank. A window will pop up. Make sure that the Book selected is PANTONE solid matte. Find Pantone 7513 M. It will be close to the bottom.
7. For the second color, click on the second color blank. A window will pop up. Make sure that the Book selected is PANTONE solid matte. Find Pantone 1205 M. It will be close to the top.
8. When finished with all three, click done. 9. Choose a soft large brush (at least 300) and for the foreground color choose black. Set the opacity in the tool settings to 75. 10. Carefully darken the edges around the image.
Adding finishing touches Now, we have the right color and a fair amount of aging along the sides of the image but now we want more of a beat up type of quality to it like it has really been around for hundreds of years. To do this, we are going to need brushes but not the brushes that are default to photoshop. 1. Go to http://www.photoshopbrushes.com/grunge-brushes.htm 2. Choose one or two of the grunge brushes, we want to make sure that it looks old so scratches, stains, and folds are the best way to do it 3. In your thaw space folder, create a new folder called Brushes. Put the downloaded brushes in that folder. The downloaded brushes might be in folders by themselves but all you need is the file that says .abr
4. In the Applications folder on your dock along the bottom of your screen (the A folder) locate
the Adobe Photoshop Folder and open it. 5. Open up the Presets folder in the Adobe Photoshop Folder. 6. In that folder find the Brushes Folder and open it. 7. Go back to your O drive and right click the abr file. Select Copy. 8. In the Brushes folder, right click and choose Paste. This will give you a copy of the brush so that it can be used and won't disappear if the computer is turned off. 9. Click on the photoshop application to reopen it or restart if it was shut down. 10. Click on the brush tool. 11. In the brush tool settings bar, select the brush pallet. 12. This will open and right in the upper right hand corner is a small triangle. Click it. 13. Select Load Brushes
14. Choose the brush or brushes that you downloaded into the Presets → Brush folder. 15. If another pop up appears with the message to Append or Cancel. Choose Append. 16. Use a dark brown or black color and add creases and stains to the piece. 17. Save as tintype.psd. 18. Save again as tintype.jpg and upload that one to your website
