[email protected] How to make a perfect Photoshop cutout Step 1: MAKE A SELECTION Open your original image of your person – Take the Quick Selection tool from the Tools palette. Tick the Auto Enhance box in the Options bar to give your selection a smoother, less blocky edge. Brush over the subject to ‘paint’ a selection marquee that snaps to the outline. Don’t worry if bits of background hiding in the hair get selected, or if fine edge hairs are excluded from the selection – you can tidy up these problem areas later. Step 2: LAUNCH REFINE EDGE Click the Refine Edge button in the Options bar (or go to Select>RefineEdge). In the Refine Edge dialog, open the View menu and choose On Layers to view unselected areas as transparency. Tick the Smart Radius box, and set Radius to 2 to start refining the edge. Set Smoothness to 9 for a less blocky edge. At this stage some wisps of hair will be missing from the selection, while you’ll see bits of unwanted background. Step 3: FINE-TUNE THE RADIUS Click the brush icon next below the Hand tool and choose the Refine Radius tool. In the Options bar set Size to 60. Brush around the edges of the hair to add missing strands to the selection, and brush over bits of visible background to remove them. If you remove hairs or reveal bits of background, switch to the Erase Refinements tool and brush over those areas to restore them. Set Contrast to 16%, Shift Edge to +20 and Output to New Layer with Layer Mask. Step 4: EDIT THE LAYER MASK Click OK to create a duplicate layer with a mask based on the refined selection. Take the Brush tool, set the foreground color to white, click the mask to target it and carefully paint in missing hair detail. Tap the left square bracket key to reduce the brush size while you work, and the right square bracket to increase the size. To hide background pixels that are still visible press X to switch to a black brush..
HOW TO ADD NEW BRUSHES, PATTERS, ETC. WEBSITE SOURCES FOR GOOD PHOTOSHOP DOWNLOADS: - deviantART (deviantart.com/resources/applications/psbrushes/) - brusheezy (brusheezy.com/brushes or brusheezy.com/patterns) - brushlovers (brushlovers.com/all-brushes or brushlovers.com/patterns) Step 1: DOWNLOAD WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR There are hundreds of resources you can download items to spice up your graphics. The ones provided above are just a few examples. Step 2: EXTRACT YOUR DOWNLOAD Once you’ve downloaded your item(s), locate the brushes in a zip file (most likely in your download folder). Then, extract them by using whatever method your computer utilizes for extracting zipped files. If the brushes are in an “.abr” file format you can download them straight into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (your version)\Presets\Brushes or a custom made folder. Step 3: FIND THE BRUSH Go into Photoshop, select the brush tool and click the downward facing arrow at the top of the window next to the preview of the brush you are using. Step 4: LOAD THE BRUSH Click the little arrow facing right at the top right hand corner of the drop-down box, select “Load Brushes...” and then select the brush(es) you wish to use.
*This method applies to patterns as well

Tips & Tricks (1) SQUARE IT OFF Making these graphics into a square might not always transfer bst in print, but for the web, square graphics can be used over several platforms without losing any quality of the image. These shapes work best for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Make sure the image size is big enough to get everything you want in, but not too big where it cannot be uploaded on social media platforms. Sticking to a 4 inch by 4 inch surface with 300 resolution (dpi) will usually be a safe bet. (2) CLARITY What’s the point of conveying information from a graphics standpoint if the consumer cannot pick up any information? Elaborate, intricate infographics are great to look at, but sometimes they can confuse people just as easily as wow them. Not all of us are graphic designers, either. Keep it simple and consistent.
(3) FONTS Utilizing a bunch of different fonts on one graphic not only helps you lose your identity, it bogs your project down and the consumer will get lost. Keep your title or header font bold and consistent throughout your project and pick a supporting font that is clear and easy to read. Remember...these are GRAPHICS. Not book reports. Tell your story through imagery whenever possible.
