2016 Program Agenda AM SESSION 9:00 AM: Shuttle runs start from H.V. Farm Hub to site for registration, 4-H DEC Credit sign-in, refreshments, networking 9:45 AM: Welcome and Introduction Justin O’Dea, CCE Ulster; Sarah Brannen, Local Economies Project  Justin, Sarah, and John will welcome participants and discuss current Cornell small grains research with the Hudson Valley Farm Hub and initiatives supporting the future of farming in the Hudson Valley. 10:00 AM: Cornell initiatives for developing small grains, variety selection synopsis, varietal considerations for the humid northeast Dr. Mark Sorrells, Cornell University  Mark will guide participants through the field and highlight the components of variety development that Cornell’s program focuses on for New York growers and for the Hudson Valley region. Mark will also discuss the foundational importance of choosing well-suited varieties for managing grain yield and quality, pests, weeds and disease.

10:50 AM: Small grains disease considerations for the humid northeast Dr. Gary Bergstrom, Cornell University  Gary will guide participants through the field to help growers identify and understand diseases of small grains, and discuss integrated disease management strategies- particularly the control of Fusarium head blight. 11:40 AM: Update on the Hudson Valley variety trial grow-outs to date Justin O’Dea, CCE Ulster Co., and Artie Lapp, Hudson Valley Farm Hub  Justin will discuss what has been learned to date in trying to manage nutrients, disease, weeds, and pests in the grains being trialed on a largescale at the Hudson Valley Farm Hub over the past two years. Artie Lapp will aid in the discussion on management logistics, and give an overview of the equipment being used in the trials.

12:00 PM: Overview/performance of the trial’s 2015 hard red spring wheat in baked goods Sharon Burns-Leader, Bread Alone; Don Lewis, Wild Hive Farm; Yonitan Cohen, Our Daily Bread  Sharon and Yonitan will share their experiences working with flour milled by Don from hard red spring wheat harvested from the trial grow-outs in 2015, and offer a bread tasting to participants. General grain quality for baking needs will also be discussed. 12:30 PM: Catered Lunch, Informal Grain plot, and equipment viewing. DEC Credit pick up. PM SESSION BUS TOUR (Optional) 1:30 PM: Bus leaves from H.V. Farm Hub to Migliorelli Farm 2:00 PM: Tour of Migliorelli Farm malting barley plantings, discussion with farmer Ken Migliorelli 3:00 PM: Tour of Hudson Valley Malt/Germantown Beer Farm, discussion with maltster Dennis Niesel 4:00 PM: Tour of From the Ground Brewery, discussion with brewmaster Jakob Cirell 5:00 PM: Leave to return to Farm Hub 5:30 PM: Arrive at Farm Hub, adjourn Pesticide Recertification have been applied for in categories 1a, 10 and 21
