Boss tears into ‘worst’ referee
HEAD IN HANDS: Richard Brady says he was embarrassed by the standard of refereeing in his side’s 1-0 defeat at Horsham on Saturday
TANNERS boss Richard Brady says he was left “embarrassed” by the standard of officiating in the 1-0 defeat to Horsham last Saturday. “I hate to have to talk about the referee, but from the first whistle there were some dubious decisions,” he said. “I feel embarrassed for him.” Tony Nwachukwu’s first-half penalty secured victory for the Hornets in a match where little went right for the Tanners, both on and off the ball. Striker Tommy Hutchings and subsequently Brady himself saw red for dissent, despite other players using foul language whenever decisions went against them. “He made it all about him today,” declared Brady. “He has
completely and utterly ruined the game.” Brady then labelled referee Ellams as “probably the worst official I’ve ever seen,” before revealing that this is not the first time in which the pair have clashed.
Not fit to referee “I’ve been into the referees room twice all season and it turns out I’ve come to see him before, after the game against Folkestone,” – in which Leatherhead lost 2-0 in February – before adding, “In my honest opinion, he’s not fit to referee.” The result will hurt Brady, who felt his side didn’t deserve to come away without at least a point. “There’s a bitter taste because
they didn’t deserve to beat us,” he said. “They didn’t do anything particularly special, but the win keeps them up so fair play to them. “We had chances but we didn’t put them in and that would have countered some of the referee’s decisions.” Brady was left pondering whether to make an official complaint but swiftly concluded “the quicker we can forget about this the better. “We’ve got two games to go and we’ve got to get four points,” remarked Brady. Leatherhead faced Eastbourne Town last night (Wednesday) before Saturday’s season showdown at home against Faversham Town.
Hutchings and Brady off in Tanners defeat
Leatherhead’s play-off push is stung by Hornets Ryman League Division One South Horsham . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Leatherhead . . . . . . . . . . . 0 LEATHERHEAD suffered a setback in their quest for promotion after losing 1-0 to Horsham on Saturday. A first-half penalty from Tony Nwachukwu was enough to secure all three points for the hosts as both Tanners’ striker Tommy Hutchings and manager Richard Brady saw red. Horsham came into the game needing just a point to guarantee their survival but it was the Tanners who started brightly, playing with an intensity and physical aggression that would have made even Tony Pulis blush. Leatherhead should have assembled a commanding lead inside the first 15 minutes. Seb Schoburgh and Tom Bradbrook both missed gilt-edged chances before Mark Simmons fired into the side netting after finding himself all alone at the back post. But ten minutes later the Hornets were ahead, Trevor McCreadie’s deflected shot fell kindly for Ray Freeman, who was swiftly bundled to the floor by Schoburgh. Nwachukwu calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to notch his seventh goal of the season.
Spilled Brady and his bench were up in arms over a perceived foul in the build up but his side responded well and should have been level five minutes before the break. Elliot Thompson’s surging run found Sam Blackman, whose cross-cum-shot was spilled by goalkeeper Michael Hunter only to be gathered before Bradbrook could capitalise. As the half-time whistle echoed round the ground, Brady strode onto the pitch to remonstrate with the referee in what would become a familiar sight throughout the second-half.

SO CLOSE: Kev Terry (right) hit the post after coming on as a substitute on Saturday
By Will Taylor
[email protected] During the interval, Brady opted to replace the ineffective Schoburgh with Kev Terry and the change nearly yielded instant results. A cross-field ball was expertly dummied by Bradbrook to leave Terry in acres of space, but his
low shot was tipped onto the post before the rebound bounced back into the goalkeeper’s arms. Leatherhead continued to push forward but lacked a cutting edge and a clinical finish. Frustrations soon bubbled to the surface and in the 76th minute Hutchings was sent off after a verbal altercation with the linesman. Moments later, Brady was directed to the stands having become
infuriated with a number of debatable decisions. The ten men still poured forward in search of a late equaliser but only the wayward shooting of McCreadie prevented the home side from doubling their advantage on the break. Folkestone Invicta’s 2-0 victory at Three Bridges saw Leatherhead drop out of the play-off positions to sixth, but a positive
result at Eastbourne last night will have put the Tanners back in the driving seat ahead of the final game on Saturday against Faversham Town. Leatherhead: Reed, Thompson, Jenkins, Coyle, Nnamani, Smart, Schoburgh (Terry 45), Simmons, Bradbrook, Hutchings, Blackman (Francis 60) Unused Subs: Flack, Boulter, Russell
