Enlightened people make fun of dreams. They do not believe in their existence. Science denies them. But science is one thing and Jewish existence is another. The purpose of science is to explain what has happened in the world, what exists in the world. The Jewish dream has within it a prophecy of what is to come, the song of the future. We are the nation of dreams!
I What is the Jewish
dream? Who is our example to make us dreamers?

These words "I will remember," became a symbol of life. They have always rung in the ears of the nation. They have always struck at the heart and given to the low and oppressed Jew of exile the ability to stand tall internally ... The poor, oppressed Jew hears in these words a beautiful melancholy tune, a tune which tells ofYosef, a prince who descended to the depths of servitude, but his soul did not go down with him. So too, the poor Jew, the rag salesman, is not embarassed by his work. .. He supports his Jewish family and buys his portion in the world to come each moment. From his denigrated work, he teaches his children Torah and how to serve G-d, and even finds a little money for charity. He is not a spiritual wanderer. He is a prince who has fallen into poverty and has not forgetten his great past. He always protects his soul from being tarnished. He guards his hidden holiness and purity, his Jewish name and honor. For he will not always be a rag salesman. The day will come- the day of redemption!
I How does
the dream itself save the Jewish people?

Whoever mourns over Jerusalem will merit to see its happiness ...

To the extent that a person feels that he is not missing anything, he is not able to mourn over Jerusalem ...
From here we see that only one who feels the loss and yearns for the rebuilding of Jerusalem can really mourn over Jerusalem. Only such a person can merit to see it rebuilt. Why does G-d reward the person who feels the loss of Jerusalem and dreams of its rebuilding? Yalkut Shimoni Vayetze 121 Midrash

It is quite understandable why Yiftach requested to be appointed as leader, because he knew that in the merit of this responsibility, he would be given strength from Heaven. Only if he would be the leader and the burden of responsibility to worry about the people's welfare would rest on him, would he then receive the supernatural ability needed to be victorious in war.
