IMPD and Indy Public Safety Foundation launch recruitment for inaugural class of IMPD Cadet Program Cadet Program aims to build a pipeline of qualified youth interested in serving Indianapolis as IMPD officers

Indianapolis, Ind. – Recruitment is now underway for the first cohort of IMPD Cadets, a program designed to develop a pipeline for youth ages 18 to 21 who want to become officers with the department. Applications are now being accepted for ten (10) young people throughout Indianapolis who will be hired as part-time employees of IMPD. In addition, Cadets will experience training and mentorship to support their path towards becoming a police officer with IMPD. "Investing in the personal and professional development of our city's youth will better their future and better the future of Indianapolis," said Mayor Joseph Hogsett. "The IMPD Cadet program is an invaluable initiative that offers career paths and mentorship to young people who need it most." A similar program operated under the Indianapolis Police Department in the past, but has not been operational for many years. “The IMPD Cadet Program launch comes at a great time for the continued growth and progress at IMPD,” said Chief Roach. “Cadets will gain invaluable experience and work beside some of the finest men and women of the IMPD.” In 2016, as part of their 100th anniversary celebration, the Indianapolis Foundation, an affiliate of the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), awarded a $100,000 grant to the Indy Public Safety Foundation (IPSF) to help IMPD launch this vital program. “We are so excited to help IMPD with this exciting program aimed to assist youth in our community who want to serve as police officers, but just need a little extra support,” said Dane Nutty, IPSF Executive Director. “This program has the opportunity to be transformative to the lives of these individuals.” The generous gift from the Indianapolis Foundation demonstrates how our city continues to come together to meet the needs of the community as well as the women and men who serve our great city. “At the Indianapolis Foundation, we fund programs that improve the quality of life in Indianapolis and support where the needs are greatest or most extensive,” said Brian Payne, President of the Indianapolis Foundation and President/CEO of CICF. “The IMPD Cadet program is a great example of both of our guiding principles.” Youth interested in being part of this exciting new program should visit www.indy.gov/jobs, click “Full Time Job Opportunities” and search for the “IMPD Cadet Program.” Applications will be accepted through Friday, May 26, 2017. The Indy Public Safety Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the safety and quality of life in Indianapolis. IPSF supports the efforts of Indy’s public safety agencies and the community. For more information, visit www.indypsf.org.
