RECENT ADDITIONS TO THE RETAIL SCENE » by Maria Bobila
Uptown Girl
After 10 years designing womenswear, Michelle Smith has opened her first boutique (right) on the Upper East Side. Reflecting her penchant for French décor and contemporary art, the store evokes the sense that you’re browsing through Smith’s home (some of the contemporary art on display is, in fact, from her own collection). With vintage Milo Baughman chairs and a velvet sofa among dove-gray walls and animalprint accents, the chic space showcases the elegantly flirty Milly line, accessories and the new children’s collection, Milly Minis. » Milly, 900 Madison Ave., 395-9100
Recipe for Style
Food and fashion are the twin passions of menswear designer Jay Kos, whose newly relocated NoLIta boutique (below) has a homey vibe (with a sofa, two generous armchairs and a Nepalese rug), as well as a state-of-the-art GD Cucine custom kitchen, where Kos, an amateur chef, whips up impromptu meals for customers. Meanwhile the creative couturier dresses such larger-than-life personalities as Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Johnny Depp in flamboyant garb (multicolored jackets, lime-green brogues and tie-dyed vests). He invites shoppers to peruse his styles while sipping a cocktail, savoring something delicious and, perhaps, smoking a cigar. » Jay Kos, 293 Mott St., 319-2770
Jewel Box
Jewelry designer Miriam Salat’s first stateside flagship is a modest affair. But what the cozy kiosk (above) lacks in square footage, it makes up for in quantity and style, boasting over 200 of Salat’s signature resin creations in a multitude of colors, adorned with sterling silver, 18-karat gold vermeil and cubic zirconia, such as peach Marquis earrings (left). » Miriam Salat, The Shops at Columbus Circle, 10 Columbus Circle, 459-8920
