“Choose a short passage (10-15 lines) from Book I of Paradise Lost that in your view stands as a ‘microcosm’ of the work as a whole. Analyze it in terms of form (imagery, style, figurative language) and content (meaning, literal truth), and discuss the ways in which form and content are related to each other in the passage, but also communicate your sense of the ways in which the passage reflects, contains, and synthesizes issues and qualities of the work as a whole, Length: 5-7 pages. Format: MLA.” --from Writing in Response (2012) by Matthew Parfitt

“The faculty members of the English department at Anne Arundel Community College have been debating whether or not the teaching of literature should be required in composition courses such as ENG111/115. This debate in recent months has boiled down to whether literature is or is not ‘good’ for the students. [. . .] This debate has reached a stalemate. The professors are not able to get much beyond saying, ‘yes, it is’ and ‘no, it isn’t.’ Therefore, the English department has decided to invite the college community as a whole to contribute to the discussion. For the next issue of The Campus Current, the editors have invited students to express their opinions on the question of whether the reading and teaching of literature promotes the overall wellness of our students. Their responses will help the English department shape the curriculum for the next semester.”
