Independence Foundation Learning Lab

The Independence Foundation Learning Lab at Philadelphia Young Playwrights is a versatile space on the second floor of the Arts Initiative at 1219 Vine Street. Expanding the organization’s capacity to serve students and to tap the potential of youth and inspire learning through playwriting, the Learning Lab is home to a variety of workshops and programs throughout the year that enable students to collaborate and learn in a tech-enabled, flexible space that is easily transformed from a traditional classroom to a rehearsal and performance space. Similarly, teaching artists and staff have access to a variety of tools and resources to activate immersive and responsive learning in their program and curriculum design. Available for meetings, conferences, classes, rehearsals, performances and other events, the Learning Lab is equipped with foldable and stackable chairs that are easily set up or cleared away to transform the space as needed. Black out curtains can be drawn to enable use of a basic theatrical lighting grid as well as a projector and screen. Rentals of the space are scalable, and may include use of any of the technology and configuration of the space according to the needs and demands of the renter. To date, the space has been used for educational workshops, rehearsals, staged readings, conferences, and meetings.
