The Heart of Town, Keeping it Beating Public Domain Design as a Key Factor in Supporting the Viability of Traditional Town Centres The traditional shopping strip has been under pressure now for some decades. Malls, "big box" retailers, noxious traffic fumes, loss of parking and, most recently, on-line shopping have all contributed to the battering that these traditional community hubs have taken. And yet, many seem to go on re-inventing themselves, changing the mix on offer, adapting the road and footpath arrangements - and surviving. The physical environment of these main streets is undoubtedly a key factor in their continued attractiveness to people - fresh air, trees, views, "legibility". It is also an element in the town centre mix that can be manipulated to optimise the chances for the healthy survival of the strip. This presentation looks at up-grading the centres of towns and suburbs through the use of public domain master plans and design manuals. Paul Knox, Landscape Architect, COMPLETE Urban
