Launched in 2008, the Partnership is a collaboration of LAUSD, the City of Los Angeles and the philanthropic sector, and today it serves more than 14,000 students across 16 campuses in Watts, Boyle Heights and South LA. INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST POSITION The Partnership is seeking a highly effective, transformational urban instructional leader to drive change and dramatically improve the academic culture and student achievement. The selected candidate will have a proven track record of increasing and accelerating student achievement, as evidenced by performance data, and will be prepared to lead the students, staff, and community toward dramatic academic improvement and success. The successful candidate will be expected to support the Partnership’s key instructional initiatives that focus on Teacher Development and the transition to the Common Core State Standards with the use of Blended Learning as a core instructional strategy. Improving teacher practice is a paramount priority with an emphasis on development opportunities, collaboration and an expanded use of a new, multiple measure evaluation system. Transitioning to the CCSS includes the development of common assessments, units of study, as well as understanding the key instructional shifts in ELA and math. Page 1 of 4
Reporting to the school principal, the successful candidate will be a committed and entrepreneurial school leader who is excited by the challenge of turning around a struggling school and making a real difference in the lives and future college and career choices of low-income Latino and African-American students. S/he will have previously worked in similar schools and will be prepared to accept the complexities and challenges of working with all stakeholders to understand and educate students from this community. The successful candidate will, in collaboration with the school’s administrative team, ensure that all members of the community (students, teachers, parents and guardians) have high expectations for student achievement, and that academic culture and performance improve dramatically across the school. RESPONSIBILITIES The Instructional Specialist will be responsible for assisting the principal in the following key areas: 1. Supervision of Instruction • Supervises classroom instruction (Curriculum, Content and Pedagogy) • Utilizes multiple data sources to inform teaching and learning and to evaluate instructional program outcomes • Manages performance of all instructional staff through rigorous and effective evaluations 3. Investing in Teacher Quality • Differentiates professional development opportunities to ensure growth for all staff • Increases teacher effectiveness by hiring, placing, and retaining effective staff • Promotes and supports leadership team and teacher leadership opportunities 4. Culture of Learning and Positive Behavior • Creates and maintains a positive culture of learning aligned to the school’s vision and mission • Models and sets high expectations for professional behavior 5. Family and Community Engagement • Engages families and community members as partners and values cultures as a resource • Maintains open lines of communication using multiple approaches to outreach

6. Systems and Operations • Develops, implements, and monitors a clear plan for school improvement and adjusts systems and strategy based on progress • Organizes school time effectively to support instructional and staff development priorities • Allocates resources effectively to support shared vision and school goals • Complies with legal and ethical requirements in relationships with all stakeholders and follows all applicable state, federal, and district policies, procedures and guidelines QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following qualities and qualifications:
Evidence of experience leading students and adults to increasingly high levels of student academic achievement Inspiring leader, able to quickly build trust and strong working relationships with students, teachers, classified staff, parents and other community members Passion for improving education and dramatically increasing achievement and life outcomes for low-income students of color; a belief that all students can reach high levels of achievement with support from adults Knowledge of research-based best practices in the field of education pedagogy, including common core curriculum design, professional development and assessments Strong ability to understand and implement instructional practices that accelerate student achievement Well-developed understanding of the Teaching & Learning Framework as the common language for teacher development; ability to provide thoughtful and effective feedback to teachers through an observation cycle Certified as an observer with TLS/LAUSD preferred Experience supervising and evaluating certificated and classified staff Ability to model an open and honest dialogue with all stakeholders; someone who is able to have difficult conversations in order to create the best working environment for students and other adults Knowledge of A-G subject requirements and how to incorporate them into a master schedule (high school) Experience leading opportunities for family and community engagement that empowers parents as partners in their child’s academic achievement Reflective, someone who is self-aware and open to new ideas and opinions Ability to plan and conduct professional development for large and small groups Experience working with Special Education students, teachers, classified staff and parents preferred Excellent oral and written communication skills and advanced computer literacy Excellent human relations/customer service skills Spanish fluency preferred Page 3 of 4
