INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST #ElectricalEngineeringTechnologist #InstrumentTechnologist #ElectronicsEngineeringTech In the intriguing world of electrical control and instrumentation systems, the Instrumentation Engineering Technologist designs, adapts, installs, maintains and repairs these intricate systems. In the oil and gas industry, electronic instruments communicate with well systems and equipment in refineries, upgraders and pipelines. Are you up for the challenge?

What does this career look like? As a technologist or a technician, you’re fascinated by the role of computers and technology in making machines do what they’re supposed to do. The task may seem simple, like measuring flow rates, pressures, weights, levels, or temperatures. But the technology behind it all is very sophisticated. As a technologist, you may work in an office environment, be involved in the design or adapting the specifications of a device. Working with a multidisciplinary team, you are one part of a big puzzle as you all work to design devices that play different parts in larger, complex processes.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary diploma in instrumentation engineering technology or computer engineering technology is typically required. In general, membership in the regulatory body for professional technologists and work experience is required to use the title Professional Technologist. Additional compliance criteria apply depending on the province or territory.

HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING Specific health and safety certifications will be determined by job requirements.

If you’re a technician, you will be focused more on maintenance and repairs, receiving work orders and traveling to the field – e.g. to drilling rigs, pump stations, or refineries – to troubleshoot equipment instrumentation issues.

What would I do? You plan, troubleshoot and tinker. If you’re repairing a device, you’re figuring out the root cause of a problem. Is it a device malfunction, or a design issue? Maybe the device works perfectly, but it was the wrong device for the application. You interact with operators to sleuth out the cause of the issue. If you’re on the design side, you will be working on software systems and contacting instrumentation suppliers to select the right devices for the process or system you’re designing. You may also be: Reading and analyzing drawings, schematics and equipment manuals. Performing and/or arranging for the required maintenance, calibration and repair of analytical equipment, instrumentation, controls and their associated systems. Repairing or replacing defective or worn electrical, electronic or instrument parts. Supervising the building and testing of prototypes according to general instructions and established standards.
