Intramural 5v5 Basketball Levels of Competition A – Most Competitive B – Least Competitive Format This is a 5 player league. Teams will be scheduled into round robin pool play, with the top teams advancing to a single elimination playoff tournament. Games are scheduled from 9:00PM to Midnight, Monday through Thursday. All basketball games will be played on the basketball courts in the Moore Field House. Forfeit Procedure If a team does not have the required number of participants (5) signed in at the scheduled game time, the opposing team that is present will have the following options: 1. Take a win by forfeit at game time. No game will be played. 2. Elect to wait 10 minutes to allow the opponent to complete their roster. The game clock will start running at game time, and if the opposing team does complete their roster, the game will begin with the remaining time left on the game clock. The waiting team will also begin the game with a 10-0 scoring advantage. If the opponent has not completed their roster within the 10 minute period, then a forfeit win will be declared for the waiting team. Each team will be allowed one forfeit over the course of the season without penalty. If a team forfeits twice within the regular season, that team will be removed from the league. All players that previously had signed in for that team will no longer be eligible to participate in intramural basketball for the remainder of the season. Nomad Rule If teams will not have enough rostered players signed in at game time, they can use “Nomads” to meet the minimum requirement in order to start the game. Nomads are classified as players that are rostered on another team within the same league. Teams may only add enough nomads to bring the roster up to the league minimum. Students are subject to the following guidelines in order to qualify as a nomad:
Must be eligible to participate in SCSU Intramurals per the IM Handbook Must be able to prove they have an active IMLeagues account
If any nomads are not currently on a roster, they will automatically be added to the roster of the first team they participate for. Nomads may not serve as team captain. They also may not play center for a team. Nomads may not participate in playoff games.
In addition, team captains are responsible for the behavior of any nomads they use in a game. Nomads can have both negative and positive aspects on a team’s sportsmanship rating. For example, if a nomad receives a technical foul, that team may receive an unacceptable sportsmanship rating. Equipment Teams are encouraged to wear their own uniforms provided they are of a matching color with printed numbers on the back. Pinnies will be available for teams to use during games. Players that need a pinnie will sign in and then leave their HootLoot with the scorekeeper until the pinnie is returned at the end of the game. If players use pinnies provided by Campus Recreation, they must wear a shirt with sleeves underneath it. NFHS rules will be used with the following exceptions General Rules 1. The game will consist of two 17 minute halves. The clock will be running except during the last 2 minutes of the second half (except for time outs or injuries). During this time the clock will stop on the official’s whistle. The clock will run during the last 2 minutes of the second half if a team is winning by 20 points or more. 2. Each team must have 5 players to start the game. Teams may use nomads to complete their rosters in the event they will not have enough players on their own roster present at game time. 3. Each team will be given 2 timeouts per game. Teams will receive an additional timeout for each overtime period. Timeout requests must be made by a player on the court. 4. Substitutions are allowed during any stoppage in play after an official’s whistle. 5. Players that commit 5 personal fouls will be disqualified for the remainder of the game. Technical fouls will count toward the personal and team foul count. 6. Each game will begin with a jump ball and the possession arrow will be used throughout the remainder of the game as necessary. All overtime periods will begin with a jump ball. 7. If necessary, a 3-minute overtime period will be played (only during the playoffs). The clock will stop on the official’s whistle in overtime. 8. The 7th team foul will result in a free throw awarded to the opposing team (with an additional free throw awarded if the first attempt is successful). 9. The 10th team foul will result in two free throws awarded to the opposing team.
10. During free throws, up to 4 defensive players and 2 offensive players can occupy the lane spaces. The lane spaces closest to the end line will remain vacant. Intentional Foul If an intentional foul is committed, the opponent will be automatically awarded 2 points and possession of the ball out of bounds. This counts toward the personal and team foul count. Flagrant Foul If a flagrant foul is committed, the opponent will be automatically awarded 2 points and possession of the ball out of bounds. Compared to an intentional foul, a flagrant foul is deemed to cause harm or attempt to cause harm. Any player that commits a flagrant foul will be disqualified and must leave the game site. The player will also be subject to disciplinary procedures as outlined in the Intramural Handbook. Technical Foul If a technical foul is committed, the opponent will be automatically awarded 2 points and possession of the ball out of bounds. Any player that receives 2 technical fouls in a game will be disqualified and must leave the game site. The player will also be subject to disciplinary procedures as outlined in the Intramural Handbook. Sportsmanship Good sportsmanship is expected from all players, coaches, and spectators. Unsportsmanlike acts include (but are not limited to) disrespect, deceit, taunting, and vulgar language. The Office of Campus Recreation will not tolerate this behavior before, during, and after a game. The captain is responsible for the conduct of his/her team and spectators. At the end of each game, the Campus Recreation staff will give each team a sportsmanship rating of either “Acceptable” or “Unacceptable”. The following behavior may result in an Unacceptable sportsmanship rating for a game:
The team or any individual player receives a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. Player(s) persistently harass opponents, officials or spectators.
The following behavior will result in an Unacceptable sportsmanship rating for a game:
The team receives multiple technical fouls Any member of the team is ejected from the game Any member or spectator of the team displays unsportsmanlike conduct after the game has ended.
Teams that receive 2 Unacceptable ratings in the same season will be ineligible to compete in the playoffs. Under extreme circumstances a team may be removed from the league and possibly face additional sanctions after only 1 Unacceptable rating.
Team captains will be held responsible for the information outlined in this rule packet, as well as the Intramural Handbook which can be found on IMLeagues.
Campus Recreation Managers reserve the right to reevaluate and adjust any rating based on team/player behavior.
