iPhone Case Intermediate Step-by-Step Guide

Autodesk Design Academy

Foreword Autodesk Fusion 360 works in the Cloud only installing a small local client to improve performance. To use Fusion 360 you will need an Autodesk ID. As a Student or Teacher you can obtain an Autodesk ID and the Fusion 360 software at www.autodesk.com/education. If you already have an ID not related to the Education Community it is still possible to obtain Fusion 360 at no cost from fusion360.autodesk.com. Designs that you create will be saved on the Cloud in Autodesk 360 and organized in Projects. These designs will be accesible from any system with Fusion 360 by logging in using your ID and can be shared with any other user who has use of Fusion 360. As you create your designs Fusion 360 will save versions and keep a record or your vprogress. The flexibility in operations to create models and the creativity that it enables will make Fusion different than any other design or CAD system you’ve used. Enjoy!

iPhone Case 2

Lesson 1: Using imported data Objectives

• Import data • Use imported data on your designs • Use advanced sketching techniques

Exercise 1.a Import the iPhone dataset

1 Open the data panel and click on upload. 2 Either drag the iPhone dataset into the dialog box or manually select it, then start the upload. 3 Once the thumbnail shows up in the data panel right click on it and select insert. 4 Select ok to leave the iPhone at the origin.

Exercise 1.b Create a case through solid modeling 1 2 3 4 5

Create a new component and name it Case, then activate it. Create new sketch on the front of the iPhone. Activate project and select the 4 edges around the outside. Hide the iPhone assembly through the browser. Use the dimension tool to offset a rectangle 2 mm from each of the projected sides. 6 Extrude the profile 2 ways, 2mm and 9mm and making sure that the operation is to create a new body. 7 Soften the edges by adding 10mm fillets. 8 Select the front face of the case and create a new sketch. 9 Project the front face of the iphone and turn all into construction. 10 Turn the top loop back to normal lines. 11 Draw a line straight down on both sides to create a new profile. 12 Use Extrude to cut a profile 9 mm into the case. 13 Using the iPhone assembly as the tool and the case as the target body. Use combine to cut the shape of the iPhone out of the case, be sure to turn on keep tools.

iPhone Case 3

Exercise 1.c Create holes for the buttons and camera

1 Activate construct midplane and select the sides of the case to create a construction plane between the two. 2 Create a new sketch on that midplance and project the buttons of the iPhone onto the sketch. 3 Turn the projections into construction lines and create a rectangle around the buttons. 4 Center the rectangle using dimensions. Set one side 3mm from the edge and the entire width at 6 mm. 5 Create a new sketch on the back of the case. 6 Project the edges of the camera and flash. 7 Under sketch activate slot and use the center points of the circles to space the slot. 8 Extrude profile, operation cut to midplane

Lesson 2: Render your design Objectives

1 Be able to change the appearance of your design 2 Change the lighting of the environment 3 See the difference between each type of render

Exercise 3.a: Assign appearance 1 2 3 4 5

Click on the workspace manger and change to the render workspace. In the toolbar activate appearance. Drag the icons onto a body to apply an apperance to the entire body. If you switch to the faces option you can apply an appearance to a specific face. Right click on a material and change the advanced options to see how each affects the model.

Exercise 3.b: Change environment

1 Use the viewcube to orient yourself so that you are looking at the front of the case 2 Mouse over the viewcube and select the triangle that appears in the lower left corner. 3 Select set as top to change the orientation of the lighting. 4 Activate environment from the toolbar. and change the styles, rotation, and exposure

Exercise 3.c: Render your model

1 Activate ray tracing and try each of the modes. 2 Fusion 360 can also upload your files to be rendered in the cloud. Activate cloud rendering 3 Select a preset and send out a rend.
