Is it Caprese or Caprice?
Is it Caprese or Caprice? This week we are featuring one of our most popular sandwiches, the “Caprese” kaˈpreːze. Many people order it as the “Caprice” which is fine because I have no idea what it is supposed to be called. Truth be told I always thought it was “Caprice” until someone came in and ordered a “Caprese.” When they said it, I liked it. It sounded so much nicer, it just rolled off the tongue. “Capreeessseeee” Like your grandparents from the old country were talking. So I immediately starting calling it the Caprese. The Caprese begins its roots as a very traditional Italian dish called “Insalata Caprese” or “The Salad of Capri.” While many variations exist, It is typically made up of Fresh Mozzarella, Tomatoes, and Basil. Coincidentally, this combination also represents the colors of the Italian Flag. Today this simple combination of fresh ingredients has expanded far beyond its roots as a salad. Anyone who has had authentic Italian pizza would immediately recognize these ingredients to be the make up of a “Margherita” pizza. We offer this delicious combination as a salad, wrap or sandwich. This is a favorite among vegetarians but equally liked by meat eaters. With summer on its way, I invite you try this delicious fresh combination of goodness for only $5 all week!
