CHCA Winter Term 2017 January 3-13, 2017 Course Description for: Surf’s Up: Hawaii Instructor(s): Ms. Katie Shinkle, Mrs. Rhoda Weston, Male Chaperone Course Type: Domestic US Overnight Service Hours: 15-20 Maximum enrollment: 24 Minimum enrollment: 16 Length of trip (if applicable): 6 days 5 nights Students will be traveling to Hawaii through the Joshua Expeditions Ministries organization. Students will serve at local ministries with the island’s homeless Overview: population. Students will also participate in daily devotions. Students will observe, participate and evaluate in the Hawaiian Christian experience as well as be exposed to different types of spirituality. Students will have the opportunity to earn service hours. 1. To develop/grow/mature in relationship with God 2. To provide leadership opportunities to students 3. To learn about the Hawaiian culture and explore the natural beauty of the islands 4. To learn about injustice and poverty through direct interaction, study and Course Goals: reflection 5. CHCA Winter Term 2017 January 3-13, 2017 Course Description for: Surf’s Up: Hawaii Description: Special Opportunities/Activities Include:  Reflecting in daily devotions and journaling  Hiking to the top of the Diamond Head Crater  Exploring gorgeous Hawaiian beaches  Snorkeling tour off of the coast of the Island  Turtle Canyon Catamaran: a dive site off the shore of Waikiki where we will be able to snorkel among the turtles  Dinner and service at a local ministry with the island’s homeless population  Visit to Manoa Falls and the surrounding rainforest  Trip to the Dole Plantation including one of the world’s largest mazes  Trip to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific  Dinner, shopping and exploring at Oahu’s North Shore  A visit to Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial Students will be traveling with Joshua Expeditions, a non-profit Christian youth organization. We will begin by flying to Hawaii and meeting our guide at the airport, who will then transfer us to our hotel. We will spend the first day (travel day) by going through a trip orientation with our tour guide and will engage in devotions. We will be engaging in devotions to start our day each day along with breakfast. On Day 2 of the trip, we will be hiking to the top of the Diamond Head Crater and will be exploring the gorgeous Hawaiian landscape on Waikiki Beach. On Day 3, we will be doing an exciting snorkeling tour off of the coast of the island as well as visiting the Turtle Canyon Catamaran, where we will be able to be amongst Hawaii’s turtles. Then, we will be having dinner and serving at a local ministry with the island’s homeless population. On Day 4, we will be visiting Manoa Falls and exploring the surrounding rainforest. We will have beach time at Oahu’s North Shore and will be spending the rest of the day there, ending with dinner and shopping. On Day 5, we will be visiting the Dole Pineapple Plantation, where we will be able to taste fresh Hawaiian pineapples! After the plantation, we will spend time at the famous National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, followed by beach time and dinner. On the final day, will be visiting Pearl Harbor as well as the USS Arizona Memorial. Throughout our trip, we will be reflecting in daily devotions about the beauty of the islands and about our own relationships with God and how this Hawaiian experience will strengthen those relationships. This trip is packed with not only fun and sun, but also service, history and physical activities!
