What A Parent Needs To Know About CAP Conferences. What is a CAP Conference? CAP stands for Career Action Plan. CAP is a way to improve communication between the school personnel and parents regarding their child’s academic goals and the progression of their student.

QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING CAPS CONFERENCE. 1. What is the difference between Smart and Core Curriculum? (*See pgs.3-4 of the SHS Course Catalog) —In smart core the fourth math credit must be above Algebra ll and the third science must be Chemistry or Physics. 2. How can I earn the Academic Challenge Scholarship (Lottery) Scholarship? See Page 5; www.scholarships.adhe.edu; Must complete the FAFSA and the YOUniversal application by June 1; ACT composite score of 19, or an equivalent score on an equivalent test. 3. How can I earn college/concurrent credit in high school? See Page 8-9; Pre-AP Pre-Cal/Trig (College Alg./Plane Trig-6 hours); Students wanting to enroll in these courses need to take the April or June ACT in order to meet score requirements for these courses.

Teacher Cadet The Teacher Cadet Program seeks to provide high school students insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America’s schools. This course is designed to encourage students who possess a high level of academic achievement and those personality traits found in good teaches to consider teaching as a career. Students are exposed to the many facets of education through class discussion, observation, and participation in public school classrooms.

A Note About AP By Mr. Roy Wilson SHS gladly offers 20 Advanced Placement courses. Qualifying scores on the yearly exams result in college credit. Each year several graduating seniors are able to erase their freshman year at college and even more students earning enough credits that take the place of one semester. SHS offers 34 hours of concurrent credit in addition to what can be obtained with successful qualifying scores on AP exams. These are rigorous, college-level courses. Students should be disciplined and ready to accept the responsibility of deeper investigations into each subject in order to be prepared for the annual AP exams. Once signed up, it will be very difficult to drop these courses. All are welcome to enroll, but a serious commitment is necessary.

GRADUATION & GRADE CLASSIFICATION

REQUIREMENTS Students will be classified at the beginning of each year based on the number of earned credits:

 Sophomores……earned 3 credits  Juniors………….earned 9 credits  Seniors……... earned 15 credits  Graduation….earned 22 credits

ACT PREPARATIONS

SHS Offers Digital Learning Courses Beginning with the entering 9th class of 2014-2015 school year, each high school student shall be required to take at least 1 digital learning course for credit to graduate. (Act 1280 of 2013). Classes offered:      

The College of the Ouachitas offers career classes to our students. Students can receive two credits upon completion in each year-long class. Juniors must have 11 credits to attend and Seniors must have 17 credits. Juniors wanting to attend both years must have 12 credits.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS MATH READY In this course, students learn the context behind the math procedure: why to use a certain formula or method to solve a problem, for example. This class can count as a 4th math credit for Smart Core and is designed to help increase Math ACT scores for students wanting to go to college. Students that enroll in this course should not have an ACT score greater than a 19. *This class is NOT approved by NCAA.*

AP US GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS This course introduces students to key political ideas, institutions, policies, interactions, roles, behaviors that characterize the political culture of the United States. The course examines politically significant concepts and themes, through which students learn to apply disciplinary reasoning, assess courses and consequences of political events and interpret data to develop evidence-based arguments.
