Room 10 Mrs. Carruthers’Class I hope you all had a very enjoyable winter break with family and friends. We had a very busy December with lots of holiday arts and crafts integrated into our classroom programming. In writing, we shared holiday wishes for the world, our families, our friends and ourselves and displayed them on colorful light bulb shapes. Our grade one friends enjoyed visiting the other grade 1 and 2 classrooms as they took part in various crafts such as popsicle stick snowflakes, animal puppets and Froot Loop trees.. Decorating gingerbread cookie characters for family gifts was a delicious way for students to connect to the 4 versions of The Gingerbread Man we shared in class as we made connections between the different endings of this folktale and practiced retelling fiction stories. Creating the gingerbread-styled houses gave another opportunity to build a structure out of delicious materials and students also made a few aluminum foil structures for various purposes in Science. The grade 1s put on a fabulous performance as they sang parts of various songs in a winter medley at our school winter concert wearing the winter wonderland hats they decorated in class. Thank you, to all the families that contributed craft items for some of these projects. In Math, students practiced solving snowmen problems, built more of an understanding of graphing in a variety of Data Management centers led by Miss Hartmier, and continued to sharpen basic addition and subtraction facts. It was a very busy month! I am hoping our students had a well-deserved rest and are ready to continue the rest of their grade 1 year with a positive mindset. We are very excited that Miss Hartmier will continue her student teaching in our classroom for the beginning of 2018, teaching for a larger portion of each day until the beginning of February. Please see the attached sharing calendar and a look at January’s learning topics. The newsletter portion of this will be posted at… https://jcaruthers.commons.hwdsb.on.ca/
